Death of DVD-R DL -- Help with the autopsy

Pain_Man

Recommended Posts

Tried to use Nero to burn my collection of Renaissance & Baroque Lute music (yeah, my tastes are electic, ranging from John Dowland, Elizabeth's I's favorite lutenist, to Bach, to Sinatra, to Rush, to Johnny Mercer) to a -R DL (Verbatim).

I have to use them for data because only one of my four set-top DVD players (the cheapest one with the least features which is my daugher's room) can read -R DLs when used to playback our home movies we burn to DVD. =))=))=))=)) (Ooops, how's those get there? )

I used Nero 7.2.7.0--using NBR, full regular version (si tu sais que je veux dire...).

Used by DW1655 at 4x (the max speed for the burner with the -R DLs).

First half burned with no issues.

Then it ate shit when it got to the second layer.

Wait, it get's weird...

Nero's 3rd party tool CD/DVD Speed tells me both that the disk is empty and that it has 2 layers and gives the position of the layer break.

256598.png

DIP (4.64) also shows the disc as being blank despite the 3.96GB of data on it.

I can't get any tool I've got to scan the disk, whether a "quality" scan or a surface scan. The tools all think the disk is empty. (I didn't think of trying to see if ImgBurn would finalize it. I'll try it.

Nada:

What the hell, exactly, is CDB?

Here's the the Nero Log. If anyone can offer some analysis as to what went wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Here's the error (msg) I think, although Nero Logs might as well be written in cuneiform julli-rasende.gif (I mean if a guy like Minty can't read 'em, what hopes does someone with zero programming experience have? :dunce: ) Maybe someone who understand hex can decipher it (which ain't me  )

:Maybe the BCIB firmware would fix that, or it could just be that you were unlucky that time around.
For some damned reason, my machine refuses to update the firmware for the Benq. The 'Qsuite' software also won't function. I have no idea why and neither does Benq's TS (it's a good drive, but their support sucks balls). They wouldn't take it back because the error, according to them, wasn't with the burner but my machine. Nice, hunh? julli-rasende.gif

I could send it in, but if there was nothing wrong with it, I'd have to pay return shipping and a labor charge that would have been more than the damned thing cost (perhaps the only negative of the fall in burner prices).

A new machine's out of the picture this fiscal year, probable next year. When I get around to it, I'm probably going to take the Benq out of my main machine and pop it into my older desktop and see if I can upgrade the FW and then reinstall her in the main machine. An ugly solution, but if it works, it's works.

blutach:

Lesson learned, my friend, lesson learned.

And to think the buzz was that -R DL was going to more compatible than it's competitor. Shit. =))=))=))=))

But I want to do something with them. They're just sitting 'round gathering dust.

Like crule says, it's been hard to find something to use them for julli-dunno.gif since DVD-Video is not an option.

Oh well, I've got one more. Gonna try again with the Pioneer 110. It burned the first one correctly.

If it flails, so be it.

There is no way on God's green earth I'd ever use anything quite as stupidly designed as a -R DL disc.

Regards

I remember having high hopes for DVD-R DL. THEN they started releasing the specs and the fixes layer break position and I knew things were starting to look bad.

As for one unanswered question :D CDB is CaliBration Database, isn't it? Mostly, it's a bullshit error. The kind where the "cause" is that they are errors difficult to specify a cause for. Most of the times the problem is in the System type of technical support database replies.

It's a Power Calibration error, isn't it? That, basically, at some point, somewhere, the PC and the drive could not keep up with the data. One got behind or ahead of the other. Thus, when a field was gone to be read, there was nothing there, and, expecting something to be there, the system didn't know what to do because it had never been told what to do in that case.
