Errors when burning ISO to DVD-R; burning audio to CD-R works fine

I have an LG GH24NS90 which has always worked flawlessly, but had to burn an ISO to DVD_R today and already wasted 10 discs because I keep getting errors.

Using Verbatim DVD-Rs that can go up to speed 16.

Already tried to change lower write speed to 4 or 8, set from DAO to Incremental. Checked firmware of the drive and already have the latest (from 2012..) Also tried burning a music CD to an (also Verbatim) CD-R and this worked fine.

Maybe also worth mentioning that when the burning has started, the buffering seems to go well (based on the green bar), but once the lead-in has been written, the data transfer (and remaining time) is varying and sometimes drops to 0. The noise of the drive spinning also drops after a few minutes and I eventually end up with an I/O / Check Condition error.

Any thoughts?

Please post a log of a failed burn to one of these discs.  Under Help, there's a Log option.

It's actually fairly common for CD's to continue burning correctly where DVD's fail or vice versa.  It's even more common on Blu-Ray versus CD/DVD as there are 2 lasers in those: one for BD and one for CD/DVD.

Just as a cursory evaluation, I'd say your drive has probably reached the end of its lifespan for burning DVD's.  My benchmark is if a particular type of media fails 3 times in a row, I then swap in a replacement drive and try again.  And it usually works after doing that.  Just did it myself last week, actually.

Interesting.  I've never seen a 24x supported write speed before for DVD.  But, that most likely isn't an issue as you said you tried slower speeds, I think.

At this point, I'd invest in some kind of USB external burner and try the same discs and image in it.  If that works, you know it's a problem with the LG drive in question.

Thanks again. Will give that a try and revert. (And yes, I indeed already tried lowering the write speed).

Borrowed an external USB LG-drive from a friend. Burned the same ISO without issues.

Any suggestions on a mor recent internal SATA replacement drive? Important that I can create proper EAC rips (and burn CDs and DVDs as well obviously).

What I use is a BD burner.  LG's WH16NS60 half height internal model in a Vantec USB 3.0 enclosure.  Either Gen 1 or 2; each have their own drawbacks.  For instance, on the G2, you cannot update the firmware of NS60's put into them.  Don't know anything about EAC rips, so I can't say if it would be a proper fit for your needs.
