Verbatim M-DISC verify error Reason: Timeout on Logical Unit / Failed to Read Sector Reason: L-EC Uncorrectable Error

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi guys!

Nine days ago I bought on Amazon an ASUS BW-16D1HT Bluray burner to record M-DISCS verbatim 100 GB, the drive came without a box, only with a plastic and two identical CDs, one had the paper in bad condition (They look like expendable generic software disks like Asus egreen).

The first 100 GB disc recorded without problems and with the correct verification, the second 100 GB disc also, but the third has had no problems during recording, although in the verification there is a damaged file or a sector that can not be read.

At first it looks like a video because it indicates that it is a .mp4 file but in reality it is like a hidden or secondary file of 25kb, it may be the thumbnail of the video, it is in a folder inside the folder where those videos are.
JJouBKX.pngJJouBKX.pngJJouBKX.pngThe failure of the verification has been just at the 99% point of the verification.

Should I be worried? Normally when recording I am always watching, I have the PC in performance mode and without going to sleep, but the screen turns itself off every so often, I do not know if that can affect. The other two recordings I was always aware and moved the mouse every time the image went, but this time I took the opportunity to go to sleep and wake up with the disc recorded, and the surprise was to find the failure in that sector in the verification process.

¿Did I leave the drive too long without refreshing the screen image? ¿Is the drive failing? ¿Is the disk defective? ¿Was the file size too small?

I installed VSO inspector and it gives errors in some sectors at the end of the disk, although the software says there are no faults and 100% is fine.

In fact I have passed VSO between the sector 47000000 and the last one and I have had errors and also the program has thrown me these screens and when I accepted the second warning it has closed automatically.

I tried again and same error

The errors seem to be at the end of the disk between sector 48514448 and sector and the final sector 48581055 Does anyone know how I can check which files that range of sectors correspond to?

Otherwise it looks like a hardware error or some problem with the inputs and outputs ¿Should I reinstall imgburn?

Any help?

You should never trust discs that even recover from unreadable sectors.  It is indicative of some future failure down the road.  And definitely any Verify failures should cause you to not trust the final disc.  Just a few weeks ago, I came across a BD-R I burned about 8 years ago that had a recovered read error on Verify.  That disc was partially unreadable then.  I should have burned the disc again, but it recovered from the read error and a manual Verify on the disc in a new, replacement drive showed no errors.

Don't bother reinstalling ImgBurn.  These kinds of errors are indicative of hardware or media errors.  Reinstalling ImgBurn will rarely help in those cases.

The ImgBurn Log tells you what file that sector mapped to:

\VIDEOS\phonevideos\201003\201003A0\31032010123.mp4

So is the disc defective or is the recorder defective?

I will make another copy, this one I will keep just in case, at the end it is that video (31032010123.mp4) that is corrupted, it is only a 25 MB video, it pisses me off but the rest of the content seems intact.

I have passed VSO inspector and it only gives me errors at the end of everything, just like the imgburn verification, I have checked the hashes and everything is correct, there are three folders in the root of the disk and one is the one with the failures, the other two give correct hashes.

I have also copied all the files to a HDD and all are copied, except the one with the damaged sector that tells me that the file can not be copied, although I can preview it with a video player, but the video is cut at the end of this for being corrupted and if I try to copy the file the disk goes crazy.

Well, it's hard to say which is at fault.  If I were to make just a cursory guess, the first 2 XL discs you burned were not nearly 100% full.  The one that failed apparently was.  So, a 2nd burn would rule out if it was the media or the drive that's bad.  Or it might be a combination of both.  The drive might not like that media.  I would not necessarily blame a defective drive immediately.  It's most likely a combination of the media not being liked by the drive.  Attempting to burn that same 2nd disc to another XL BD would be more indicative.  If that fails, too, it would be more likely the media, but not defective media.  Just bad media.  For instance, I have proven that the for a decade Verbatim branded blue and white BD-R which were rock solid with no failures are now just junk within the last 6 months.

The most common areas for failure are at the layer changes and the inner and outer edges of a disc.  For XL media, burning the entire disc involves both a layer change and the outer edge.
