rlp Posted February 8 Posted February 8 I'm trying to create a Blu Ray video disc from BDMV & CERTIFICATE folders and creating expensive coasters. My media is new Verbatim 43748 BD-R DL 50GB 6X. My burner is a brand new ASUS BW-16D1X-U external USB drive. Using Windows 11, Intel i5-13600K CPU, 32GB DDR5 ImgBurn runs for a while then fails. A transcript of the log file is included. ImgBurn .ibg and .log files attached Any advice to get a successful burn would be gratefully appreciated! dbminter Posted February 8 Posted February 8 There have been many reported issues with DL BD with many burner models over the years. I've only experience with burning BD-RE DL and they aren't ready for prime time. Another problem has been Verbatim's branded blue and white BD-R have turned into trash over the past 6 months, after a decade of solid reliability. So, the bottom line is, probably, you won't get a successful burn. You could try seeing if there are DataLife Plus BD-R DL out there, though they will be inkjet printable and a bit more expensive for something you won't need. DataLife Plus are the higher quality Verbatim discs, so maybe those BD-R DL will be better. I still need to test out the DataLife Plus BD-R to see if they can still be trusted like they were in 2023/early 2024. So, the bottom line is the only hope is Verbatim's inkjet printable surface DataLife Plus, which may or may not still be reliable.
rlp Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 @dbminter Thank you for responding so quickly. So "Invalid Field in CDB" means faulty media and there's nothing in the source files/folders or ImgBurn settings that would affect this? That's unfortunate. DataLife Plus BD-R DL are about CAD$130 on Amazon for a 25-pack spindle, so about CAD$5.20 each. Not too bad but if they don't work it's a gamble. I was wondering if creating an ISO file first and burning that at a lower speed would have any effect on the outcome? I have 3 of my original Verbatim 43748 BD-R DL 50GB 6X discs left so I guess it won't hurt to try. Failing that I guess I could extract the video and audio and re-author the content to fit on 2 BD-R 25GB using PowerDirector.
dbminter Posted February 9 Posted February 9 Invalid Field in CDB is a write error. So, it's either the hardware or the media or a combination of both. It wouldn't have anything to do with the source material being put onto the disc/into the image. Writing to an image file first is generally preferable in common usage. A lower speed might help, but most likely wouldn't. I have that model ASUS BD burner, but I've never burned a BD-R DL in it before. Or any BD media beyond SL except BD-RE DL in LG WH16NS40 and NS60. Can you provide a link to where you got these BD-R DL you're using? I'm curious to see what they look like/the packaging. If they are the branded blue and white Verbatim discs, as I said, their BD-R SL went to crap.
rlp Posted February 9 Author Posted February 9 The BD-RL DL I'm trying to use came from Amazon Canada: Verbatim 43748 BD-R DL 50GB 6X - 5 Pack Jewel Case Verbatim 43748 BD-R DL 50GB 6X - 5 Pack Jewel Case : Amazon.ca: ElectronicsI I'll try creating an ISO and burning it at a slightly lower speed. I have nothing to lose... it'll either work or it won't.
dbminter Posted February 9 Posted February 9 Yeah, those have similar blue and white branded labels to the Verbatim BD-R SL that were fantastic for a decade and then became shit over the last half year.
rlp Posted February 12 Author Posted February 12 I've yet to try burning another disc, this time working with an ISO instead of folders, and reducing the burn speed. I'll be doing that since I have the discs, but I was wondering if there are any brands other than Verbatim which could be considered in the future (which won't break the bank)? I found a couple on Amazon.ca at reasonable prices: 1. Smart Buy 10 Pack Bd-r Dl 50gb 6X Blu-ray Double Layer Recordable Disc Blank Logo Data Video Media 10-Discs Spindle CAD$28.42 https://www.amazon.ca/Blu-Ray-Double-Recordable-10-Discs-Spindle/dp/B00KB4YVF0/ref=sr_1_1?crid=29UTKFG8LWL1N&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.XhB7ucWqrgDAahqYG6_5sw.jaVmISddREC4XN_NXz0NDj1ZyIN0gq0KkK9bODTc7uU&dib_tag=se&keywords=Smart+Buy+10+Pack+Bd-r+Dl+50gb+6X+Blu-ray+Double+Layer+Recordable+Disc+Blank+Logo+Data+Video+Media+10-Discs+Spindle&qid=1739376505&sprefix=smart+buy+10+pack+bd-r+dl+50gb+6x+blu-ray+double+layer+recordable+disc+blank+logo+data+video+media+10-discs+spindle+%2Caps%2C109&sr=8-1 2. Both seem to have pretty good reviews on Amazon and elsewhere. At CAD$28.42 for 25 Smart Buy, it may be worth a gamble.
dbminter Posted February 12 Posted February 12 I've never bought any BD-R DL media so I couldn't say anything about any other manufacturer's quality. You might as well try using ISO's and attempt slower speed burns. You've got no other BD-R DL discs to try and you know the ones you've currently got probably will result is problems, too, which means they won't be useful normally. So, you might as well experiment as opposed to just tossing them.
dbminter Posted February 14 Posted February 14 Okay, I just got my first order of Verbatim DataLife Plus inkjet BD-R since Verbatim's branded blue and white BD-R went to trash. I just finished burning a nearly full disc. Only 563 MB were free. It completed Write and Verify successfully. Now, this isn't a guarantee yet. I had one of the now bad Verbatim BD-R from my last stack of blue and white branded discs that completed Write and Verify, but the next 3 failed to either complete Write or completed Write but failed Verify. So, I need to do some more burns, which is convenient, as I need to do a near 20 disc BD-R backup right now. And I still need a week to make sure the discs are still readable. My first stack of bad branded blue and white Verbatim BD-R completed Write and Verify but were partially unreadable after less than a week. So, I need to wait a week and perform a manual Verify on all of those 20 BD-R's I mentioned that need burning in the previous paragraph.
dbminter Posted February 14 Posted February 14 I've burned 12 of these DataLife Plus inkjet BD-R thus far. All 12 completed Write and Verify. So, they're thus far ahead of the last batch of branded blue and white Verbatim BD-R I used.
rlp Posted Saturday at 07:02 PM Author Posted Saturday at 07:02 PM @dbminter You've been busy! Good news that you've had success so far with the DataLife Plus inkjet BD-R, and I'll probably lean towards those in the future instead of the blue/white ones. The price is not bad for the DataLife Plus inkjet BD-R either (CAD$ 63.98 for a 50-spindle on Amazon.ca). My issue is that a have a few ISOs of music concerts that require DL media, and the DataLife Plus BD-R DL discs are a little on the pricey side (but then making coasters on other media can be too!) I may take a gamble on the cheap-o "Smart Buy" ones and see if they live up to their reviews. WIth regards my initial problem, I used ImgBurn to create an ISO from the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders and then attempted to burn that ISO using ImgBurn, lowering the burn speed to 4X and using another of my remaining blue/white Verbatim BD-R DL discs. This time it worked perfectly and the resulting disc has no issues with my Sony Blu Ray player either. Whether doing it that way helped, or if I just happened to have a non-crappy disc, I don't know, but thanks for your help and input anyway - much appreciated! As a matter of interest, who is your go-to supplier for optical media? (ImgBurn log file attached) ImgBurn2.log
dbminter Posted Saturday at 10:24 PM Posted Saturday at 10:24 PM I just finished completing 17 Writes and Verifies. I order all of my optical discs from Amazon.com. I get DataLife Plus/AZO for everything from Verbatim. Except the BD-R which used to be fine but aren't anymore. Now, it seem the DataLife Plus inkjet option is the only way to go. I get some 8x DVD+RW from Memorex because they're the only ones you can find on Amazon and eBay anymore. And I get some Memorex Ultra Speed CD-RW off of eBay because that's the only place you can find them. Memorex didn't farm those out to CMC like they usually do and instead used Mitsubishi, which makes Verbatim's high quality media.
dbminter Posted Sunday at 02:35 PM Posted Sunday at 02:35 PM I've finished 11 more successful Writes and Verifies. So, I don't foresee these failing to complete burns successfully. However, I still need to wait 1 week and do manual Verifies on these discs. My first bad batch of branded blue and white Verbatim BD-R would successfully complete Writes and Verifies but be partially unreadable after only a few days. A week has been a good indicator with the replacement batch I got which appeared to be fine before the 3rd batch wouldn't even complete Writes.
dbminter Posted Monday at 03:10 PM Posted Monday at 03:10 PM I've completed 14 more successful Writes and Verifies. That makes up the majority of the discs in this cake stack. As I previously said, now I just need to wait until Saturday and perform a mass manual Verify on each of these 42 discs. Then, I should feel relatively comfortable stating the DataLife Plus inkjet BD-R are still of high quality.
rlp Posted Monday at 07:41 PM Author Posted Monday at 07:41 PM That's one hell of a lot of discs, and they're looking good so far. My requirements are far less than that, and I'll bear that in mind going forward when I need 25GB discs again. A pity their DL discs are relatively expensive, and that's what I mainly need now, although not in those huge numbers you're burning.
dbminter Posted Monday at 08:01 PM Posted Monday at 08:01 PM I had a backlog of lots of data to archive to BD-R. I had some partition backups from January 1st that couldn't be copied to BD-R at the time because the old Verbatims weren't trustworthy anymore and I needed to order some of the DataLife Plus ones to test and see if they were good. There was a 300 GB and 500 GB backup I was able to use with 42 discs from this 50 disc cake stack and a 500 GB and 800 GB partition backup still left to do. See, I HAVE to do these kinds of things so others don't have to. These are the kinds of things that happen to me. Like a batch of Verbatim BD-R that would complete Write and Verify but be partially unreadable a few days later. I only happened to "luck" out noticing it early before I used more than 11 discs, but I did permanently lose some data as a result.
dbminter Posted Wednesday at 05:33 PM Posted Wednesday at 05:33 PM I decided to get a general preview of what the manual Verify runs might give me on Sunday, when I plan to start them. I manually Verified the first 2 oldest discs. Being the 2 oldest discs, done first, they'd have the higher likelihood of going bad first if they are like the first batch of branded blue and white Verbatim BD-R that would complete Writes and Verifies but would be partially unreadable after a few days. Both of those 2 oldest discs passed manual Verifies.
rlp Posted yesterday at 04:16 PM Author Posted yesterday at 04:16 PM It never occurred to me that optical media could degenerate like that after (home) burning, but apparently it can. I wondered why M-discs claimed to be good for 1000 years. Good luck finding an optical disc drive (reader) in 1000 years time though.🤣
dbminter Posted yesterday at 05:27 PM Posted yesterday at 05:27 PM Well, you'd be surprised. Zip Drives, introduced in 1995, are pretty much obsolete, yet you can still find them in use today. You can still get after market replacement parts 30 years later. I think the primary problem will be finding HUMANS in 1,000 years time! LOL
rlp Posted 23 hours ago Author Posted 23 hours ago "I think the primary problem will be finding HUMANS in 1,000 years time! LOL" ... Good point!! Well, I thought I was out of the woods when I got a successful burn at 4x, but I just created another coaster on my blue/white Verbatim BD-R DL discs. It got to about 40% through and then it failed. I tried to get a screen shot of the pop-up window but my weird non-standard Logitech keyboard would not comply, so I copied down the following: I/O Error! DEVICE : [0;0;0] ASUS BW-16D1X-U A105 (E:) (USB) Scsi Status : 0x02 Interpretation: Check Condition CDB : AA 00 00 93 33 40 00 00 00 20 40 00 Interpretation : Write(12) - Sectors : 9646912 - 9646943 Sense Area : 71 00 05 00 00 00 00 0A 00 00 00 00 24 00 00 00 08 21 SK Interpretation : Illegal Request ASC/ASCQ Interpretation : Invalid Field in CDB The ImgBurn log file is attached below. So far out of 4 attempts I have 3 coasters and 1 success. Damned annoying to say the least. I doubt that the Verbatim store on Amazon would care if I sent them a shitty review. I have 1 blank of this box-of-5 left. I could try writing at 2x though I think it's just a bad batch of discs and whatever I do will just be a crap-shoot. ImgBurn.log
dbminter Posted 22 hours ago Posted 22 hours ago I got similar results with my last batch of branded blue and white Verbatim BD-R. The first one completed Write and Verify without errors. Then, 3 failures in a row to complete Write. On both an ASUS and an LG, so it was the media. So, I made sure to image that one successful Write and Verify to reburn to a different disc in the future when I got good media. BTW, a tip for the future. You can copy and paste the contents of error window dialogs in ImgBurn. When an error window pops up, just make the error window the focus and use CTRL+C to copy the contents of the error message to the Clipboard. Then, you can Paste that info, say, to a text file or just directly into a post on these forums.
