My friend has a Dvd Recorder which will only record to Dvd Ram discs which are very expensive. What are these discs? and would it be possible to change +RW discs through some kind of booktyping to Dvd Ram?

Posted

No I don't think it will.

I have a Panasonic DVD?RW/Ram recorder under the telly (very pleased with it too) and the RAM discs look completely different to normal DVD?R's. They are gold and kinda have square dots on the back of them. Once recorded on they will not playback on the PC BenQ drive as it does not support RAM reading, however my Pioneer DVR-111 does read them just fine.

So short answer no I don't believe you can trick the recorder into using other discs altho you might want to Google for a hack to do this. Finally the RAM discs seem to hold up better to constant re-writing than DVD?RW's so in that sense they are worth the money.

Don't forget that you can get them at www.svp.co.uk for usually a lot less than in the high street :)

Thanks for the link mmalves. Seems the Ram format is superior to -/+RW and the discs are getting cheaper.

Thanks for the info lfc - much appreciated. Your Panasonic seems the dog's dangly bits able to record to all formats - no wonder you're pleased with it - whereas my mate's will only record to Ram disc.

what make and model recorder does he have, because the cheaper end of the market ones only wrote to +RW , most RAM recorders were middle to top of the range to top .

You cant change a RW to RAM format at all .

If your fortunate enough to have a RAM capable drive on your PC, then a good prog to get is tmpgenc dvdauthor, which will allow you to read and convert to normal +/- discs if you want to save/archive your camcorder footage.( my panny only does -rw and RAM)

Bought my RAM discs from svp about 3 years ago, and they still perform well now after many many recordings

I got a batch of Panasonic DVD-RAM discs from SVP too volvo, they work great, like the old VHS cassettes without the shit quality !! :P

Ok, so I bought some Dvd Ram discs just to try them out. Doesn't matter that they wont playback on my LG stuff as that can be changed, and they will play on my PC. Could I output my PC to my main TV?

Here's the log if anybody would like to look/comment. How is it the write speed is only 1.4 to 1.6?

NVIDA GeForce 7300 SE

Changed the settings as you said and its now burning at 3x. Thanks donta...a good tip

Also when a new disc is loaded for the first time Imgburn gives a warning that the disc is not empty and do you want to overwrite the disc? Something like that. What's that about?...

Nvidia seem to say has TV out to SD or HDTV this would depend on the card,s manufacturer as some take off features or even add them to their own specs.

If it has TV out and further to that it is HDTV out you will get fantastic output to an LCD tft monitor or TV that has component in at 1280x720 for 720P high def or if it can accept 1920x1080 then you would get 1080p.

The res of the actual output would depend on your source material though.

All I can find is an S-Video socket on the front. Do they work both ways?

How would I find the card manufacturer?

I'm holding out for Lazar TV next year...

so your system is sort pre-built up from ADLI or LIDL etc.

If that is SVHS out then you would need either a TV with SVHS in or you may have been given an adapter that went from SVHS to component out/in on TV i.e Red green and blue even though it goes red blue green.

My systems a pre-built Advent Core2 from PCWorld. I bought in January to avoid Vista.

Getting an adapter from SVHS to RGB sounds like a good idea, but I'm now thinking of updating my Dvd Recorder. Something that an external hard drive would plug into would be good.

Thanks for your help...

Sorry to resurrect this but I'm having problems with ram discs...

I burned a Dvd to Ram Disc which overwrote the data which was on the disc from new. I suppose it was some kind of packet format data.

The film wouldn't playback on my friend's Panasonic Dvd Ram recorder, it just showed Un Formatted on the front screen.

So if I burn a Dvd Ram with Imgburn it wont play on my mate's Dvd player, but it did play back on my PC. I'm trying it on another friend's player to see if it works on that.

Can Imgburn be made, or are there settings, to write a Dvd to Ram disc without destroying the format info that's already on there? I assume it's ok for burning data...

Thanks...

Mmm I don't recall these issues with mine at all - did you format the RAM disc in the PC before burning to it ?

From memory I think I used one of the formatted RAM discs (from when I tested them in the Media/Drives forum) to burn a copy of the kids ICE AGE 2 film. That worked fine in our Panasonic DVD player.... I honestly don't remember changing any other settings. If I get the chance tonight I can retry with one of the brand new RAM discs - what model number is your mates player ?

Sorry for the long delay in posting lfc, I didn't see you'd posted.

No, I didn't format the disc. I selected an iso, clicked on burn and a msg came up saying I was going to overwrite the information on the disc, or some such, and I clicked ok and burned it.

As it worked for you I'll try again. Must be me.

Mates machine is...Panasonic DMR-E75V. Its a Dvd/Vhs combi model.

Thanks for your help, time and trouble...

Regards
