PiLO Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hi there, i have a Samsung SH-S183A (S-ATA Burner) plugged to Nvidia S-ATA Controller Port 3 on my Asus A8N Sli Deluxe. Port 1 & 2 of this Controller are used for Raid-0 of two identical drives. To my problem: Yesterday i got my first DL media (Verbatim DVD+R DL 2,4 / MKM-001-00 / Made in India). I burned the first disc with the latest DVD-Decrypter (3.5.4.0) at 2,4 (higher speed wasn't possible) and it worked without problems. Then i realised that ImgBurn is made by the same developer as the outdated DVD-Decrypter and i installed the latest version of this app. When i started it i got an error like "DeviceIOControl (IOCTL_STORAGE_MCN_CONTROL) failed!". I ignored that but i have to mention that i don't got this error in DVD-Decrypter before but after installing ImgBurn it was also present in DVD-Decrypter. Then i started to burn my second DL Disc and here is the log: I 17:41:12 ImgBurn Version 2.3.2.0 started! Then i tried another burn with DVD-Decrypter but there i now got the same problems. Burning of Single Layer Media works like before - no problems there. So is there any drivers or such things installed together with ImgBurn that may cause this? It can't be the wrong cable since it's S-ATA and to check if the cable is faulty i tried another one - but the problem remains ... Thanks in advance for any help!! greets PiLO
LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Hmm that's an odd error for an SATA drive! It might well be driver related but only you can really test that - and I'm not sure you could if you're relying on the NVidia ones to get the RAID working. You'd have to try going back to the default MS ones, before then putting the latest NVidia ones back on again. You should also check your filter drivers via the 'Tools' menu. To help with the 'Media change notification' message I need to know what the exact error was. I can promise you that installing ImgBurn has not done anything to cause it to come up. ImgBurn is just an exe, if it's not running, NOTHING to do with ImgBurn is running and there's no way in the world it could break other programs.
PiLO Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 (edited) Thanks for your fast reply! I took a screenshot Filter Driver Load Order, since i don't know if it's ok or not .. Edited August 10, 2007 by PiLO
blutach Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 Yesterday i got my first DL media (Verbatim DVD+R DL 2,4 / MKM-001-00 / Made in India Sad to say, this might be an issue. I have read reports that the MII disks made by Moser Baer are inferior. Try getting ones Made in Singapore or even Taiwan. Regards
dontasciime Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 When you started ImgBurn did you still have 3.5.4.0 open ? and when you tried 3.5.4.0 again did you close ImgBurn ?
PiLO Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 When you started ImgBurn did you still have 3.5.4.0 open ? No. and when you tried 3.5.4.0 again did you close ImgBurn ? Yes. Sad to say, this might be an issue. I have read reports that the MII disks made by Moser Baer are inferior. Try getting ones Made in Singapore or even Taiwan. Cause this specific Error message came up (Logical Unit Communication CRC Error (ULTRA-DMA/32)) I thought it can't be a media problem, but i hope now it is I will soon try to get my hands on other media and try again. Thanks so far for your answers! btw: I googled this problem and read some posts, that some boards produce problems when connecting a s-ata burner. Can anybody confirm this? I couldn't find any information on how Asus' A8N Sli Deluxe and the SH-S183A work together .. i have the latest bios on the board, even installed a newer beta bios, but the error comes up again ..
LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 You don't need a screenshot of the filter drivers window, just click the 'clipboard' button and then 'paste' the text into your reply.

PiLO Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 I've changed some things and now it works!!! But i don't know which of the following changes helped me: I first updated my "Silicon Image SiI 3114 SoftRaid 5 Controller" and "Silicon Image's Pseudo Processor Device" with the latest drivers available on SI's site. Then i deleted the Upper Device Filter and Lower Device Filter Entries in the registry like explained in some threads of this forum: ===============================================Filter Driver Load Order - ImgBurn v2.3.2.0 =============================================== Upper Device Filter: redbook Upper Class Filter: [None Found] Device: CD/DVD-ROM Device Lower Class Filter: [None Found] Lower Device Filter: imapi Filter Name: redbook File Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\redbook.sys File Version: 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) File Description: Redbook-Audiofiltertreiber Product Name: Betriebssystem Microsoft® Windows® Product Version: 5.1.2600.2180 Company Name: Microsoft Corporation Copyright: © Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. Then i tried to burn the same image again and it worked. Also the burn quality seems to be way better: - I checked the first (working) burn with kprobe and there were quite high PI and PIF errors (avg. PI above 300, max. PIF was 13 i think .. average 6) and also very much of them - the last burn is very good compared to the first one (avg. PI 21,38; max PIF 4 .. avg. PIF 0.14) I know the SH-S183A is not a serious quality verifying drive but i guess this huge difference in scanning results shows at least, that there is a quality difference. Thanks for all your help!
LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 I hope you didn't delete the two filters shown in your post?! Those two are fine and are supposed to be there.
PiLO Posted August 10, 2007 Author Posted August 10, 2007 I hope you didn't delete the two filters shown in your post?! Those two are fine and are supposed to be there. Hehe .. no, the post above yours shows like it looks now. I deleted the "Upper Class Filter: SiRemFil" and the "Lower Class Filter: PxHelp20" .. hope this won't lead into other problems? But i made a backup, before i deleted them.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted August 10, 2007 Posted August 10, 2007 The SiRemFil driver would be the cause of IOCTL_STORAGE_MCN_CONTROL not working (maybe the newer driver that corny has fixes the issue though?). It did that on my old machine too before I removed it. Anyway, I hope it's better for you now.
