I 12:49:50 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: OPTODISCR016) (Speeds: 4x; 8x; 16x)

Try Verbatim DataLifePlus discs made in Singapore or Taiyo Yuden discs, your choice is not the best media available.

I did a quick look around and didn't find a new firmware for your drive.

I'll need an 'I/O Debug' enabled log of you attempting the same thing please.

All you have to do is press F8 before you click the 'Write' button.

Probably best to save the log as a file and upload/attach it to your post rather than doing copy+paste (it'll be a lot longer!)

Ok, you got a totally different error that time.

E 12:34:57 Failed to Reserve Track! - Invalid Field in CDB

It's looking more and more like a disc issue.

Try the decent Verbs/Taiyo Yudens and get back to me if it still happens.

Got the Verbatim DVD-Rs, tried burning, no luck again... the log is attached.

I could not find any DataLifePlus DVDs from Verbatim, only Verbatim CD blanks under that name are on sale, at least where i live. Online shops offer 50-DVD spindels claiming they are DataLifePlus, but those I checked out were not so marked. The ones I bought are marked "Verbatim DVD-R Advanced AZO+ 16x certified", are they decent Verbs, or is this still a media problem?

I also noticed that in BIOS main screen, on the PC in question, in the SATA settings for IDE devices, the setting for optical drive is AUTO, with CDROM and DISABLED as additional choices. Do you think I should I set it to CDROM?

Also the setting for the SATA configuration currently has SATA set to ENHANCED, with configure SATA as IDE (nothing to change there), it can be set to COMPATIBLE. Is this of any relevance?

Not to dwell on ancient history, but I encountered optical IDE-ATA drives which did not function properly if set to slave on a given IDE channel, can you tell me if smthng similar can be happening? The optical drive is currently connected to SATA2, with bootable HDD on SATA1...

I 11:09:24 Destination Device: [1:0:0] HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH20NS10 EL00 (D:) (ATA)

I 11:09:24 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: MCC 03RG20) (Speeds: 4x; 8x; 16x; 18x; 20x)

I 11:09:24 Destination Media Sectors: 1.807.440

I need that debug log again but on a brand new disc please. The one you've got in there has already been written to (or at least attempted) - it's size is totally wrong for a new disc.

SATA is a 1:1 relationship so master/slave doesn't really come into it.

The only mode settings I've seen/know about for SATA are where you configure it as IDE(SATA), RAID or AHCI. You'd want the first one for optical drives.

Hah! It worked, with brand new Verbatim... so I was using the the wrong blanks, as you said! the log is attached.

BTW, the previous blank, the one you said was already written to - my PC shows nothing on it, how come?

Thank you all for your help!

I'm glad the Verbatims are working ok for you :)

Your PC (i.e. Explorer/My Computer) doesn't report the same 'size' info that a burning program will.

It shows the size of the data on the disc whereas a burning tool will show the physical size of any tracks/sessions on it.
