sy5tem Posted March 15, 2008 Posted March 15, 2008 Hello, nice program,, i love it, work nicely its light, but i have a question with the new update... what does OPC do exactly and what does it change , i know its called : Optimum Power Calibration but , does this make better burn? is it to know what power would be required on the lens to match the media need to get the very best burn? thank you for your help!

Performing Optimum Power Calibration (OPC ) is a special technique used in newer CD/DVD recordable drives to perform a test write and read in an area inside of the lead-in, in order to determine the best laser power for recording and to adjust to each recordable disc, which may vary slightly from different manufacturers, or for other reasons. I guess the only way to find out if it helps - is to do two burns - one with and one without and then scan them in DVDInfoPro or a similar program.

The difference is that from ImgBurn v2.4.0.0 and on, a command to perform OPC is sent to the drive before the actual burn stage, so that possible problems with your media/burner/firmware combination can be spotted before wasting a disc with a failed burn. Notice that if the OPC command fails ImgBurn will ask if you want to continue anyway or if you want to abort

Discs: Imation DVD +R 8X Burner: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7200A 1.05 Burning Speed: MAX (8X) Discovery Mode: All Sectors OPC Disabled. OPC Enabled. OPC Disabled. OPC Enabled.

Cynthia Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Searched the house yesterday for some blanc CD's. In that search I found approx 500 blanc DVD's of various brands. I got all of those as gifts in the past years and as they didn't appeal to me then I put them away. One spindle is labeled 'SKY Recordable DVD +R 1-4X' - that really sounds a high quality brand. Perhaps as good as the old friend Princo that I also found to many of. So I have plenty of discs to perform these types of 'Settings' test with.
blutach Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 I'm not sure about your conclusion here, cynthia. OPC disabled has one PIF peak that ruins its graph and score. Other than that, its total PIEs and PIFs are significantly lower, as are its max PIEs. The PIFs especially, are very good on the disabled graph (except for the spike, which could just be the media). Perhaps a test on an RW might get an even better comparision, as this way, you'd be writing on the very same disc. However, both burns would be classed as excellent (surprisingly, given the media involved). Regards

Ran some tests today to compare the results of the same discs in my burners with Nero DiscSpeed and also with DVDInfoPro, and the only conclusion was that I got even more confused about this stuff. I have a big package of new unscratched RW discs to try with. Will run a new test.
