The write curve seems to start at 5x and then drop down to around 1.3x. It might be due to the bad support in the firmware and it therefor decides to write very slowly.

Can you post the filter drivers you have installed in your computer?

Main Menu -> Tools -> Filter Driver Load Order

Just copy and paste the text into here.

Have you followed the DMA post of the FAQ? If the drive is using PIO mode, not only will it burn very slow, it'll also have to relink the burn many times, which degrades burn quality a lot.

Yes, I have... twice... but it didn't do anything! I think I might have to upgrade to Vista... Or get an external case so I can use the drive with my laptop.

Does that Filter Driver Load Order tell you anything?

EDIT: I have noticed that the write speeds vary from disk to disk! The successful one offers more write speeds, could this be a way to tell the useless ones from the ones that will work? Thanks!

Possible yes. but until you try some other brand of DL disc you will not eliminate the problem

have you tried cleaning the laser in the drive with a cleaning disc at all ?

a disc cleaner and other discs is a lot cheaper than buying an external case and vista :whistling:

So you uninstalled all the controller entries from within Device Manager?

Until you get it burning at something other than 1x, stop wasting DL discs.

At 1x, your drive will constantly be using its 'burnproof' function as 2.4x is the slowest DVD+R (or DVD+R DL) media will burn at. The drive will have to keep stopping and starting the burn and that's anything but optimal!

Yes, I uninstalled them, but on reboot they automatically reinstall. When it re-installs should I restart or not? I don't usually, though I have tried it both ways with a DVD+RW (SL) and it does the same thing.

Thanks for all your help!

Uninstalling the controller entries should wipe out all channel entries and also the dvd/cd drives too.

Please double check that's actually happening.

Once you've rebooted, look at the channel entries and make sure all the devices have DMA enabled (on the Advanced Settings tab).

Yup... tried every speed possible. The same thing happens. I got further last time... how come it won't get that far now? (tried lots of disks from the same pack...)

Verbs arrive today but I can't try them until the weekend... will they burn with the drive I mentioned in the first post?

Thanks!
