jamison.j.b Posted March 4, 2015 Share Posted March 4, 2015 (edited) I'm trying to make my windows 98 retail floppy bootable for use in VMs. I have the full (legal) retail box of Windows 98 SE. This is the method I use to create the startup img file: - I copy all the files from the original retail startup disc to a directory (Including IO.sys and MSDOS.sys, so in total 20 files). - I drag & drop all the files into imgburn - I have checked "Include Hidden Files" and "Include System Files", then I give the ISO 9660 and UDF labels.I have "Make Image bootable" ticked. I set "Emulation Type" to Floppy 1.44MB and I extract the boot image from the original floppy, then I apply the boot image to the "Boot Image" line. Everything else is left default. I build the image as a img file. The floppy image won't boot up in either VMware Player or VirtualBox. I know I am doing something wrong in the image creation, but I'm not sure what. Suffice to say, my knowledge of image creation is quite limited. If anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 4, 2015 Share Posted March 4, 2015 So you're mounting the image under the floppy drive device within VMware/virtualbox? If so, you don't want to build an image, you just take a complete copy of your (extract the boot image from your) existing floppy disk and point VMware at that. If you make an ISO (or any other extension you give it) in ImgBurn, it's meant for an optical device and therefore needs to be mounted as one... not a floppy device. Beyond that, I don't 100% follow what you're trying to do. The only Windows 98 install disc I've seen was a CD and that was already bootable. jamison.j.b Posted March 5, 2015 Author Share Posted March 5, 2015 (edited) The North American (I'm not sure if this was the case in the UK & Europe) retail release of the full Windows 98 Second Edition, used a startup floppy and a CDROM disc (the CDROM disc wasn't bootable). Although, I have seen modified images of Windows 98 that do possess the IO.sys, MSDOS.sys, Command.com, and Oakcdrom.sys files. I was trying to mount the windows 98 diskette to a VM (as a image).
