This happens using Verbatim +R as well as Imation +R

drstratts, Have you made sure your firmware for your drive is up to date. www.rpc1.org Also CMC MAG discs, forget about them, if you do manage a successful burn to them they won't last longer then a year maybe before they degrade to a point of not being able to be re-read. Maybe try using Verbatim -R media to burn to and see what happens. I use -R for SL burning and +R for DL burning, although I have no probs with burning to +R for SL data. Maybe your machine just doesn't like burning to those particular +R media.

My burner is fairly new but Dangerous Brothers have two firmware patches. I will next try one of them. Can someone please give me advice of this. Have not done this before.

I would've suggested that the problem was due to bad media, as the others have already mentioned, but since exactly the same problem also happens with different (and much better) media, then I would say it's either a problem with firmware or, more likely, a problem with the drive itself. If the drive's still under warranty then I'd suggest getting it replaced after trying out a new firmware.

Start ImgBurn in write mode, right click on your drive and scroll down the menu to the bottom. Click on firmware check and go on from there. I did a quick look at the site and couldn't find your firmware listed.

Also, slowing decent media down to 4x doesn't mean you'll always get the best burn. They may do more work with higher speeds so be sure to try those too.

Do you recomend that I now try to replace the drive? If I go to Dell won't they just give me the same garbage that I initially paid for?

Yeah they'll probably replace it with the same drive.

Assuming that it is free, it's certainly worth a shot - even if it still doesn't work!

After that, you can buy any drive you like. They're pretty much all available for ?30 - ?40 so they're not stupidly expensive anymore(compared to the ?200 odd we were paying a few years ago!).

Did you try burning at 8x, 12x, 16x btw?

A US-based friend of mine recently had the same problem and pestered Dell so much that they gave him a decent drive.

Their recent problems may make them less pliable, however.

Still, I have a 4163B and have never had an issue with it. So you may just have got a bad one. Good luck

I would give Dell a call too - my friend got them to replace a faulty drive a few months back (NEC I think) and its all been grand ever since.

Just spent a long session with Dell on the phone. Did the E113 Firmware download and many other things. Never could get the burner to play a DVD. It would burn a small data file. Never did try to get it to burn a video. At the end of the session the guy started to talk about how it is forbidden to copy copy-protected DVDs, my DVD burner worked because it could copy a small data file and I had a DVD player to play DVDs: so I really didn't have a problem. I told him I wanted to copy videos that were not copy-protected and he seemed to think such things did not exist. He would not replace the drive. He suggested we do a full system restore instead. I did not want to lose my data, so we did not proceed. I guess I will back everything up and do the restore. Funny thing about Dell. They sell the DVD burner but do not provide software to make use of it. As far as I can tell it is not possible to burn from file with the Roxio software that comes with the computer.

I've had similar "laborious" calls to DELL myself when something goes wrong. However, when I know for sure there is a problem after doing my own testing I just pretend to be following their instructions on the phone (with added delays to make it look like I'm doing it) and just keep telling them "No, that didn't work either", or for longer tasks I say "I'll try it and get back to you" (without actually doing it).

After they've exhausted all avenues they say they'll replace the faulty part.

So, I would suggest calling them back and saying you've done the system restore but the problem with the DVD drive still exists.

Yeah that's a good suggestion - ignore the trained chimp on the phone and pretend you have done all their tests, then say its vital you have this drive as you regularly back up your important home videos to DVD.

Just spent another long session with a Dell technician. They run a diagnostic test on the burner and it turns out fine. They then say that my problem can not be the burner because of the results of this test and want to do a full system restore. I can not do a full system restore because there are all sorts of things on my hard drive I can not back up because the burner does not work. Dell says hire a technician to back up the hard drive and then do the full system restore. We even tried to burn a DVD using IMGBURN. It failed as usual after 10%.

did you really think Dell would take the blame ,you should have done what Defenstration says in his post above .Find a friend that has a USB external burner and try to burn with that or maybe you can borrow another drive that you know works and install that if it burns OK then you know your drive is shot

I had a problem with the DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive of the first DELL laptop I had, but only had a return-to-base warranty. The problem only seemed to arise during playback of some DVD's (although admittedly I didn't do much burning at the time). When I called them to report the problem I followed all the steps they said to take (I was none the wiser at this time), including running DELL diagnostics. All the tests I performed indicated the drive ran perfectly, but yet the drive still had problems with playback of some DVD's.

I even suggested that they get a copy of the DVD in question to play back, so that when I sent the laptop back to them they would be able to see the problem - DELL said we don't budget for things like that so it was my problem.

After several calls I finally said "Look, I'm not happy with the drive because it's faulty and I can demonstrate that, despite the fact that you can't reproduce the problem. If you send the laptop back to me again without replacing the drive, I can tell you now that I will be calling you up again to report the same problem again, and the cycle will continue which helps no-one." (or words to that effect). I added a bit of fluff saying "This is my first DELL and I've been very happy with it up to now. However, the problem with the drive is putting me off buying a DELL ever again."

Finally they agreed to send an on-site technician round (even though I was on a RTB warranty) and he replaced the drive. I offered to demonstrate the problem with the DVD in question (which I did) but he wasn't interested and just replaced the drive.

After a second call when I had a problem with the power supply and had to go through a similar laborious process, I became wise and without following their instructions just told them every time "Tried that but it didn't work!". While you still have to go through the steps with them, which is procedure, it cuts down the time you spend before getting the part.

When it comes to DELL, a little white lie never did them any damage.

My new "technique" hasn't failed me since (As long as you sound sincere when you call)

But a system restore will not kill documents in my docs etc. It is pretty safe.
