You can't use 'Test Mode' for a multisession disc. Burn a real disc and post the error if there is one.

First thing I'd target is this: I 20:52:13 Destination Media Type: CD-R (Disc ID: 97m26s66f, CMC Magnetics Corp.) You most likely are using Verbatim Life Series CD-R you found in a brick and mortar store? Those are made by CMC Magnetics, which are the worst optical discs out there. About 50% of the problems on this board are caused by CMC media and people switching away from them to high quality media generally find the issues go away. It's not 100% guaranteed, but it's where I'd start. What you want are Verbatim DataLife Plus (NOT Life Series.) CD-R, sometimes referred to as AZO. You generally only find those in online stores like Amazon.com.

I've never burned any discs before and today was my first time. I watched some tutorials which suggested using CD-Rs to burn my content, and picked a CDI file out to try the burning process. it always fails to burn, and I'm not sure what the issue is. I am using an external disc drive and some cheap CD-Rs though, which very well could be my issue. I can't make heads nor tails of the error logs. I tried a couple times in test mode so I didn't turn another disc into garbage. some help would be appreciated, although I am not at all a tech-savvy person. I've left the whole log pasted below. in my experience sometimes the drive wants to burn at 16x and sometimes it does not and only gives me 12x. its very weird. also for some reason my Verbs are giving me only 24,220,000 bytes instead of the 25gb (25,000,000 bytes)

I believe 1.05 was what I last tested with. I don't know if I burned at 16x or not. I used the maximum burning speeds. I know the LG and ASUS even though they say they burn at 16x BD-R only actually burn at 12x max to BD-R. Oh, I was not aware Pioneer had stopped making drives. That explains why the no new firmware updates in like 2 years. I use the ASUS BW-16D1HT half height internal BD burner in a VanTech USB enclosure. Unfortunately, LG's WH16NS40 is the only other good option and it has issues of its own. The NS60 used to be better than the NS40 but 1.) LG no longer makes it and 2.) the NS40 has issues of its own.

Well, if you're using the DataLife Plus ones and Verbatim doesn't make non-DataLife Plus inkjet printable BD-R, then it must be the drive. However, you said you bought these May of last year? That was back when they were quality blue and white branded surface. I tried the 2213 briefly. It had no problems with the blue and white branded discs I threw at it, but Pioneer is known to bork their firmware. So, it's possible they released a firmware update since then that broke Verbatim BD-R. I returned my 2213 for other issues. 8x DVD+R DL that only write at 2.4x. 8x DVD+RW that only write at 6x. And Pioneer seems to have ceased development on their firmware, so if it is an issue requiring a firmware update, no apparent fix is probably forthcoming. Pioneer has made terrible drives for over a decade now. For over a decade, they had issues where 8x DVD+RW were not written correctly. This WAS initially fixed by the 2213, but it had other issues. And still does, like reborking the 8x DVD+RW firmware so it only writes at 6x.

not really true. i burned many blank branded disks and they worked fine before in multiple optical drives. and i bought my disks at may 26th last year, and they where produced earlier so i doupt. i also have printable ones with me but they are the same. the printables cost a bit more because of the paper it uses. also the pioneer bruned the blu ray disk before at 2x completly fine and my BIS/LDC scans where very good.

You're probably using the blue and white branded Verbatim BD-R. Up until around the middle of last year, those were impeccable discs; not anymore. They are utter junk now. What you need are the Verbatim DataLife Plus BD-R. Unfortunately, you pay a premium on those since they only come in inkjet printable variety, and you probably won't print any labels to them. However, they are the only quality BD-R Verbatim makes anymore.

just today my (last) pioneer 2213 got to me and i have been having fun with it after dealing with shitty LG's the whole last year. anyways i tried burning my VERBAT-IMe disks at 16x, it worked but got this weird error that i skipped after retrying a few times. burned and verified succesfully. heres the log:

Life happens. Yeah, the Initializing, Writing LeadIn, and Finalizing steps are somewhat random in terms of how long they can take from burn to burn. Sometimes they're quick, sometimes not so much. Just let them run, as you did.

@dbminter A lot of time has passed since my last post, and I apologise for not posting a follow-up sooner. I got distracted by other issues! Anyway, so far I've burnt 6 of the new 25-spindle of DataLife Plus BD-R DL discs I got from Amazon, and all of them were successful. While I appreciate this is certainly no guarantee that they are 100% reliable, they are definitely better than the previous blue/white Verbatim discs that I had, so for me, it's a win so far! The only "hiccup" I had was on the second disc I burnt. When ImgBurn "finalized" the discs it took anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds to complete on five of the discs. With the second disc, however, the drive kept revving up and slowing down again, over and over, with the screen remaining on "finalizing". I recalled comments from other people that had said "let it run", so I did just that. I walked away and left it. About 10 minutes later from the other end of the house I heard ImgBurn's little jingle it plays on completion, and I returned to find it had completed successfully. The disc plays back fine on my Sony 4K blu-ray player with no issues, so I have no idea why finalization took so long. I don't currently have any more stuff to burn that requires a DL disc, so I'm not sure when my next burn will be. I just wanted to let you know that the discs appear to be working well and to say thanks once again for your help!

Good! Glad it worked. That it was the drive in question and not the disc. I had figured it was, most likely, a drive issue, as opposed to the disc not being readable.

Depends on what you mean by "pull the file without corruption." Are you getting any kind of errors from ImgBurn? If so, what are they? And is this on the ASUS you said you had to try?

It's hard to say for certain. Could be a fault in the hardware or it could simply be the laser in the unit isn't very good to begin with. Since it can read some CD-RW but not most of the others you tested, that's more odds on average a fault in the device. However, you wouldn't be able to tell unless you got another one of these units and tested it. Otherwise, it would be down to the laser used in the device. It's having a reflectivity issue reading those CD-RW's. Which would mean if you wanted to use those particular CD-RW's, you'd have to try a different model of drive.

I own this recorder. Where cd-rws are concerned, it does not read from TDK,Traxdata and Smartbuy. It always says 'Disc Error'. But strange enough it reads Maxell cd-rws. May this be a fault in the recorder? Another recorder that I own, Teac cd recorder does read all the mentioned brands. When recording normal cd-rs, it works on all brands. Your views are solicited please.

I did a little digging into your MATSHITA drive. It's a slim model drive, but it doesn't appear to be external. Did you put this drive in an external enclosure yourself? It could be just that someone put that model into an enclosure for you and sold it that way.
