BD-RE failed to write retrying error

I am trying to burn a 40GB iso on to a Sony 50GB BD-RE DL. I got about 11 failed to write errors as in the log below. THe burn completed though but it freezes when playing back in my standalone bluray player. Any ideas. Is it the media or the drive itself at issue?

Turn off 'FastWrite'.

It's better to control the quick burning (aka the drives automatic write/verify) by formatting with 'spare areas' enabled or disabled.

It's impossible to say if it's drive or the media at fault. Try the same disc in another drive that's the same model, then you'll know (of course I know that's probably not going to be possible).

Have you been doing a proper full format on these discs before trying to use them (it normally takes a few hours) ?

Then you're pretty much stuck, the drive doesn't like something about the discs.

I'm not familiar with all the BD dyes, but you might be able to find some BD-RE DL discs that use something different to 'MEI-T01-01'.

Does the drive have an issue with single layer BD-RE discs?

I assume that one made it through a proper 3hr long erase/format ok?

Do another full erase, but this time, enable spare areas (Tools -> Settings -> Write tab -> Page 1 -> Options box) before doing so.

Then do a discovery mode burn on the entire disc.

I'm leaning towards it being a faulty drive right now - or the firmware is just rubbish and won't let it write to anything.

  • 2 weeks later...

That looks like it burnt ok (well, it got to the end!)... what did the log say?

You don't want any write retries on a BD-RE disc.

You can test the burst rate in something like Opti Drive Control (or CDSpeed / DiscSpeed). The burst rate isn't going to make a difference here though.

p.s the format is now 85% complete.

there were no write retries, and the log was clean. I am trying another full erase. The only difference this time is my AV(Nod32 64 bit) is turned off.

What do u use for cleaning bd-r?

All done, no problems to report.

If it really just stops without any sort of error being displayed, it's probably due to drivers or something.

yay!! After repeatedly trying to erase, hang, reboot, now the drive has stopped working, looks like. When I open imgburn, it does a 5 minute search for device and then find the drive. And when I select write mode, it says device is in the process of being ready and sits there. eject does not work also.
