Burning DVD+RW failure

I've just been trying to burn a tiny image (59 MB) to a DVD+RW. (The brand is 'Datawrite'.) I gave ImgBurn permission to erase the disc. That took a surprisingly long time - about 15 mins. How long should it take please?

Then, when I thought the burn had finally been done, I got this message:

Close Session Failed!

Device: [3:0:0] PIONEER BD-ROM BDC-202 1.01 (D:) (SCSI)

Reason: Unknown (Internal Target Failure) (0x44, 0x4C)

After a few retries I canceled from that and then saw 'Ready (Disc Needs Formatting)'. Is that normal? The previous contents of this DVD+RW (created by asimilar procedure and burned with ImgBurn) seemed OK, so I didn't expect a problem, or any need to reformat.

Anyway, I OK'd that and 'Erasing Disc' appeared again.I wasn't optimistic of a different outcome and sure enough it failed to Close, with identical message.

I've just seen your request to include a copy of the log. (BTW, it's very handy being able to view it while processing continues.) I've pasted it below for that operation. Hope you can help isolate the problem please.

Formatting is different to erasing.

DVD+RW need to formatted before the drive will accept any 'Write' commands.

ImgBurn extends on that slightly and basically, unless the disc info on the right states 'Formatted: Yes' for a DVD+RW disc, ImgBurn will prompt to format it. (that status comes direct from the drive)

Once it's been formatted properly by ImgBurn you won't need to format it again unless another program messes it up - or the drive didn't do it properly in the first place (bad media support?).

If there's something on the disc and it's formatted properly, ImgBurn will just use what's known as 'direct overwrite'. That's to say you can just issue write commands to sectors that already have data on them without the need to erase them first (this is where DVD-RW is inferior because it would need quick erasing first).

A full format on DVD+RW disc at 4x would indeed be about 15 - 20 minutes so there's nothing to worry about there.

From your log I'd have to guess that the drive/firmware doesn't like that media, there's a 1.07 firmware update available so I'd try that first.

Thanks, appreciate that very fast reply.

Pleased to report that the next attempt with a different DVD+RW brand, Tuffdisc, was OK. I'll retry other examples of the 'Datawrite' later.

Thanks too for that firmware link. Always a bit nervous about messing with hardware, but I've downloaded and might pluck up the courage to give it a try!
