  1. I was starting to wonder if there was a strange magnetic field (Bermuda Triangle) encircling my home. Would I have to move to be able to burn a DVD?

Maybe there is a problem with the electricity? Was I going to have to generate my own?

    A New Guy,

Could you send me a PM and let me know if you made any progress with your SATA problem.

    Thanks,

    rcubed

I was losing it and took a break. Sorry, rcubed.

    46. Removed IDE RAID drives to make room to install the (gulp) fourth different DVD drive (Plextor PX-750A)

    47. Tested 8x +DL with 100 per cent success rate. Halleluiah!

I took an even longer break...

    48. Returned the Plextor PX-755SA for warranty replacement and received a replacement in 5 weeks.

    49. Reinstalled IDE RAID drives and the new replacement Plextor PX-755SA

    50. Tested 6x +DL with 100 per cent success rate.

    Operation Successfully Completed

A happy ending and one to tell the grand children. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone...

  2. A New Guy

I downloaded the manual for your mobo. It looks like your mobo has two sets of SATA connectors one for the NVIDIA controller and one for the SIL 3114.

Where do you have the Plextors plugged in on your mobo. I would recommend the SIL 3114 SATA slots 5,6,7, or 8. Slots 1-4 are the NVIDIA SATA. I don't remember whether or not I tried mine on the NVIDIA SATA controller. I have the HDs plugged into the NVIDIA, so I put the Plextors on the SIL3114 to avoid contention in the controller with the HDs also I may have tried them on the NVIDIA and had problems. I don't have any RAID sets configured for the SIL3114. The 716SAs are just regular drives on the controller. Mine are plugged in slots 5 and 7 (they show up as logical devices 0 and 2) any slot should work. To my knowledge I never loaded the RAID software for the 3114s. I don't know how your mobo boots up, but I get a SIL31114 message along with an option of F4 to configure the RAID. This may be doing the same thing the software you can load under XP to manage the RAID configuration.

I am also running XP Pro SP2. My Silicon Image 3114 shows up under SCSI and RAID Controller in Device Manager as Silicon Image SiI 3114 SoftRaid 5 Controller. The driver level I am running is 1.5.10.0. It's available out on the Silicon Image web site. I may have had to update the 3114 drivers from the original ones that came with the ASUS disk. Microsoft has had two driver updates for hardware on their site. Like I said I'm running 1.5.10.0 currently.

I am unclear on what the Microsoft updates are about. I have searched Microsoft Knowledge Base for Windows XP. I cannot seem to find anything for Serial ATA, SATA, Si 3114, or nforce4. I was able to get the SiI 3114 version 1.5.10 on the link you provided. thanks

I'm hoping you have them on the NVIDIA controller and that is the problem. Moving them to the 3114 should fix your problems (I hope). If the 3114 controller is configured as a RAID set that may also be causing problems. I would think deleting any raid sets would fix that and allow your Plextors to be regular drives.

The link to SIL for the 1.5.10.0 driver is http://www.siliconimage.com/support/suppor...amp;osid=4&

Let us know how you are configured and make out.

    Cuber

Thanks Cubed. It sounds like you went through something simular to what I am experiencing. What firmware level your Sil 3114 controller have? You can get that on boot up.

    42. Changed BIOS setting to Sil3114 SATA Raid Control: SATA RAID 0,1,0+1,5. Moved 716SA and 755SA to Sil 3114 SATARaid BIOS 5.2.16. Installed Silicon Image SiI 3114 SoftRaid 5 Controller 1.5.10.0 driver. Both drives are unable to verify the DVD succussfully.

    43. Changed BIOS setting to Sil3114 SATA Raid Control: SATA. Moved 716SA and 755SA to Sil 3114 SATALink BIOS 5.2.16. Its an older version but I am at the latest motherboard firmware. I do not believe there is anyway to upgrade it further. Installed Silicon Image SiI 3114 SATALink Controller 1.3.10.0 driver. Both drives were unable to verify the DVD succussfully.

Since I upgraded my motherboard firmware I thought I should repeat some earlier tests.

    44. Moved 716SA and 755SA to NVIDIA nForce4 Serial ATA Controller 5.10.2600.666. Both my drives were unable to verify the DVD succussfully.

    45. With the Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller 5.1.2600.2180, my Benq 1640 is able to verify the DVD sucessfully.

All three drives have now developed a new annoying warning message from imgburn: "DeviceIoControl(IOCTL_STORAGE_MCN_CONTROL) Failed! - Media change notification has NOT been disabled." I read a post http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=569&st=20http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=569&st=20 from LUK saying that the Sil 3114 controller causes it.

  3. you can just use imgburn to verify, in the verify mode, you can either check agianst and image or just make sure that the whole dvd is readable :)

    Thanks. What a great feature.

Have you tried verifying the DVD with a different drive after it was written by the Plextor to see if it is just a verify problem.

This disc that fails to verify on the new Plextor 755SA and my old 716SA. However it does verify successfully on my Benq 1640. Is my DFI LANPARTY UT NF4 SLI-DR Expert nForce 4 SATA not compatible with SATA drives or are both my SATA drives now broken?

  4. Did you check on the Plextor website and see if the SATA chip set is listed as compatible with the Plextor SATA drive. I had a really difficult time with my 716SA and and Asus A7N8X Deluxe. It used the Nforce 2 chip set. The drive would be flaky on verifies. The burns appeared to be ok. ...The SATA optical drives can be really picky.

I checked the Plextor website and no boards from DFI appear to have been tested. But my previous motherboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum) was compatible with both my 716SA and 755SA drives. Maybe I should buy a 4th DVD burner (IDE)?

I have since updated to an Asus A8N-SLI Premium and that is working for both my 716SAs with no problems. I have them on the Silicon Image 3114 controller.

The DFI UT Lanpart DR-Expert SLI has a Silicon Image 3114 controller but it only appears to work in a RAID configuration.

Have you tried verifying the DVD with a different drive after it was written by the Plextor to see if it is just a verify problem.

How can I verifying the DVD with a different drive? What software would I use? Or do you mean simply watching it?

    Thanks Cuber....

  5. It is just like old times again. I have been making coaster after coaster. I had to take a break as I was out of money and Verbatim DVD+R DLs. I have since spent another $500 on this computer. But of course the second BFG GeForce 7900 GS OC (PCIe video adapter) was not meant to fix this problem. However I did try replacing my RAM with 2 x 1GB Mushkin Redline PC-4000. Also I have pulled out my 200 Gb Maxtor DiamondMax 10 SATA drive and stuck in an old 40GB Western Digital Caviar WD400EB drive in its place for testing purposes. Should a 5400 RPM hard drive be good enough or should I replace it with 7200 RPM? I have 4 new spindles of Verbatim DVD+R DLs.

  10. I found a Plextor 760A review from June 06.

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/87359/plextor-px760a.html

"...a 6.4x speed translates into 16 minutes to burn 8GB of data, whereas an 8.8x speed burns it in 11 minutes... But it's ultimately eclipsed by the LG GSA-H10N. At ?34, it was easily the fastest drive on show. Single-layer discs burnt at 12.7x for both +R and -R, and dual-layer DVDs at 8.8x and 6x. "

  11. first get over the fastest thing and dont get caught up in the numbers ,on single layer discs faster than 12x and the quality of the video goes down ,same thing with Dual Layers faster seems to have problems 2.4x-4x will be fine ,all the DL media should be Verbatim and the best single layer is Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden

Pioneer ,NEC,BenQ,Lite ON all do the job the media you use is very important

Does a successful verify mean a good quality burn? If so I would like to let you know that I have had great luck burning 100+ Verbatim +DL at 6x on my Plextor 716SA. I do not think I had a single failure (except for the last 2 weeks, where the wheels have fallen off).

The graphs and charts say there is nothing special with Plextor any more?

  12. good call it was the 760 A and not the SA couldn't find anything on it that wasn't Euro /Aussi, is it so much different than the 755SA that is available ?

The average consumer usually assumes the latest model is the best? My knowledge of drives is low. The big sales pitch on the 760 is it burns single layer 18x. Of course will it do it on the disc I use? Is that disc in production? If so does it cost an arm and leg? Is it in North America? I hope someone who makes all the graphs in Drives and Media section can give me an educated answer? I hope they read the chat section. When I saw the form titles I thought I would post this question in Drives and Media but after seening the content there, I thought it was better in imgburn support section. Now for some reason its in a section where jokes and Doctor Who postings are the most popular.

  13. good call it was the 760 A and not the SA couldn't find anything on it that wasn't Euro /Aussi, is it so much different than the 755SA that is available ?

I later regretted posting this buying question in this thread. I created a new one thread but some one did not think it was approprate in this group and moved it to Chat. I will continue there....

  14. How's your cabling?

I have reseated Plextor (SATA) many times. I can try borrowing another cable from a friend to eliminate it as a possibility.

The Benq (ATA) is on a flat 80 conductor cable. I also tried a rounded 80 conductor cable too. It is the only drive on the cable and is plugged into the end. The jumper is set to master. The RAID on the motherboard is disabled in BIOS.

Maybe, as corny suggested, slow things down a bit, since you're getting problems. 8x for DL is pretty fast burn. The only good one you've had is at 2.4x (other than 1 at 6x). I'd stick to that.

Ok until I get this problem resolved it will only be 2.4x burns.

Removing the device won't help with DMA. You need to remove the channel. I suspect it will be better on a DMA enabled IDE channel, although you have indicated this is sub-optimal.

I followed the FAQ on DMA and uninstalled the controller. I read my comments from an earlier post and see how what I said could be confusing. Is this what you mean to remove the channel?

I am using the NVIDIA nForce3 250 Parallel ATA Controller (v2.6) and NVIDIA nForce3 250 Serial ATA Controller (v2.6). Are there compatibility problems with this driver?

  15. I tried to buy a Plextor PX-760SA drive but it appears they are not available in North America.

they are available and lots of places have them Page Computer ,The Nerds,Comp-U- Plus Direct,Amazon.com just to name a few

BTW www.Newegg.com has them they dont list the model but list it as the Plex 18X dvd rw its a 760.they have great service fast delivery I buy all my drives from them

Are you confusing the Plextor PX-760SA model with the PX-760A? I am unable to find the Serial ATA version at any of these websites.

  16. I tried to buy a Plextor PX-760SA drive but it appears they are not available in North America. Maybe my 716SA is bad? The Benq has mostly been sitting on the shelf. It is used only to determining if burn problems are hardware or software related.

What drive burns the Verbatim +DL the fastest and most accurately?

My 716A did 6x 99% of time (until just recently). I can get another one but it seems foolish if the first one died early. There is a 755SA model available too. My preference is for SATA as switching back to an ATA burner would mean I would have to replace my 2 x 200 Gb ATA mirror with 2 new SATA drives.

  17. 11. Removed OS HD. Installed new HD and loaded OS. Installed imgburn.

LIGHTNING UK!: Thank you for your time.

I hate reading all these cries for help with no happy endings posted so for those like me I will keep you updated on my search for "Operation Successfully Completed!"

    I tried the following tonight:

    5. Verbatim DVD+DL burned ok in another computer so the spindle of discs should not be the problem.

    6. Went back to Plextor drive. Uninstalled the serial ata controllers device drivers. another bad burn

    7. Switched to -R to save money. Tried using another burning application. another bad burn

    8. Uninstalled Realplayer. another bad burn

    9. Uninstalled Microsoft Windows XP Video Decoder Checkup Utility, Addbe Download Manager, Adobe Flash Player 9 Active X, and Mouse Suite. sucessful burn.

10 Switched to +DL. another bad burn

I rarely see the same error twice. It seems hopeless to try and determine anything out of these error messages. They appear to be the same from many other burning applications too.

I checked the DMA and it was PIO. I am sure I checked this before making these posts and it was DMA. I removed the device and rebooted to have it reinstalled. I burned another coaster. I tried out the suspend and hibrinate feature for the first time just receiently. I did try AnyDVD once but I believe I reloaded my computer wiping it out. I see no trace of it in Add and Remove Programs.
