Imgburn hangs on writing (IDE Drive connected by IDE to SATA adapter)

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I recently changed my motherboard to an Asus M3A78-CM. Considering that I've to use IDE channel for two IDE HD, I connected my DVD writer (Benq 1620) to a SATA channel, using an IDE to SATA adapter.

The drive is recognized by the OS, can read disks and also write DVD using CdburnerXP. Then I tried to burn an iso image to a DVD+RW using Imgburn:

1) ImgBurn starts normally and correctly identifies the drive.

2) I erased the DVD+RW using the Imgburn function

3) When I start writing the image, Imgburn hangs. Nothing is written on the log. The process cannot be terminated: when I try to stop it using the Task Manager, the whole system become buisy and the PC must be turned off.

Additional informations: the interface used is the default one (MS SPTI). No other can work, because on my PC the required SW components are not installed.

Do you have some suggestion ?

Thanks,

Fabio

Looks like your IDE-to-SATA adapter is hanging the I/O (that's why the whole computer hangs). What's the brand and model of your motherboard? ( sorry my bad should've seen this on your original post) Which SATA ports have you tried it on?

It would be better if you could use the burner on the onboard IDE port and use the IDE-to-SATA adapter on the less important IDE HD you have

Hello,

the brand and model of my MB is Asus M3A78-CM. Now the DVD writer is connected to SATA 2 channel. I can use the drive to read DVDs and I'm succesfully using at least another DVD burning software: CDBurnerXP.

For that reason I'm trying to understand if there is a way to continue using it with my favourite burning SW ;)

Regards,

Fabio

The only thing I can think of that could help is using Incremental write type (you can set this in Tools -> Settings -> Write tab (page 1)). Also make sure you're using the latest BIOS available for your motherboard.

Enable I/O debug mode in the settings (I/O tab) and then burn again - let me know what it says in the last 3 or 4 lines once it's stuck.

If you don't want to write it out by hand, take a picture on your camera if you like and post that up - just make sure it's clear!

Hi,

I enabled I/O Debug, adding the registry key (I did not find this option in the settings).

Here attached a picture with the last screen of logo, when the system hangs.

Thanks,

Fabio

That final command is used to query the drive and see if the special 'Test mode for DVD+R/+RW' media is enabled.

Hanging on that is the fault of your adapter, that's why they're not really recommended. Other programs don't offer the same advanced functionality that ImgBurn does, hence why they don't issue that command and therefore hang too.

Are there any jumpers on your adapter? I had one that wouldn't process certain non-standard commands by default but would do once I'd changed the jumper.

If you really must keep that drive, get a Silicon Image 680 chipset based PCI card for it. Failing that, invest in a new SATA burner.

Hi Lightning UK,

invest in a SATA Burner ??? In the present economic scenario, nobody is investing in IT assets :D (at least my customers told that every time I meet them ... ).

Considering that from your analysis the IDE to SATA adapter is not able to convert the DVD burner commads, I followed the suggestion from mmalves: I tried to use the IDE to SATA adapter on an Hard Drive and it works. Now the burner is connected as slave to an IDE channel and it works too. The only drawback is that the IDE drive master on this channel is forced to work as UDMA2 like the burner and not UDMA5.

Thanks again for your time,

Fabio
