LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 25, 2009 Posted September 25, 2009 Update your firmware and try burning at 8x, 12x and 16x (in that order). http://www.firmwarehq.com/Lite-On/LH-20A1L/files.html If it fails on all 3, try cleaning your drive. Are those discs branded by Verbatim or some other make?

ourmanritter Posted September 28, 2009 Author Posted September 28, 2009 Still not exactly sure what the issue is/was... firmware, speed setting, or bad discs... but I now can successfully burn using either 12x or 16x write speed settings with these discs. Firmware update can't hurt, but likely the speed setting was the conflict... seems like the discs are okay since no new failures with these discs using manual speed settings. Thanks for your help. LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 You've got the wrong idea about AWS, take a look at the guide for it in the Guides forum. If you don't configure anything then it'll just use 'MAX' - which for your drive/firmware/media combo means the drive will burn at 18x as per the list of 'supported' write speeds.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted September 28, 2009 Posted September 28, 2009 Because that's what your drive reports/supports. Remember you have a 20x drive there. They don't do 20x media so 20x speed is achieved by 'over speeding' the 16x stuff that uses decent dyes.
