Still not exactly sure what the issue is/was... firmware, speed setting, or bad discs... but I now can successfully burn using either 12x or 16x write speed settings with these discs. Firmware update can't hurt, but likely the speed setting was the conflict... seems like the discs are okay since no new failures with these discs using manual speed settings.

Thanks for your help.

In case anyone's interested, here are the details...

updated firmware from BL05 to BL06:

...however, same error occurred while using AWS.

then tried manually setting the write speed as suggested...

You've got the wrong idea about AWS, take a look at the guide for it in the Guides forum.

If you don't configure anything then it'll just use 'MAX' - which for your drive/firmware/media combo means the drive will burn at 18x as per the list of 'supported' write speeds.

i'm sure i'm missing something, but why is img burn identifying the media as supporting 18x if the label is stating 16x? otherwise i wouldn't need to configure the write speed..

i now set the speed to 12x for this media id in the AWS to be safe, but i'm still curious as to why img burn identifies the disc as being able to write at 18x... or why that speed is thought to be supported.

Because that's what your drive reports/supports.

Remember you have a 20x drive there. They don't do 20x media so 20x speed is achieved by 'over speeding' the 16x stuff that uses decent dyes.
