Okay, I had problems in the past while burning my DL backups but now i get errors all the time.

First i was using my laptops slime drive and getting a successful burn 1 out of 3 times ( i would just throw 2 attempts away) because i couldn't get my sony external to work either.

Now i cant get either to go through a full burn

I'm using verbatim 2.4X singapore DL, and have updated both firmwares. I'll list both logs below first is the slime drive from laptop second is a Sony external DRX-710 Dual burner. Please help I've only finished about 10 DL burns out of about 40 and i can't figure it out anymore. I don't care about slime drive but i really want to get the Sony to work correctly.

I'd try giving them both a clean with a cleaning disc.

Then try again.

If it still fails, try changing the write speed to 4x.

If it still fails, get yourself a new external burner (the Sony must be about 4 or 5 years old now).

Thanks will try the cleaning.... If i buy a new external which should i buy. I know your gonna say some top of the line model, but is there something that works good that's not too expensive? I can sacrifice speed over reliability and money. Also where's a good place to look to buy?

Thanks

The cheapest external burners are usually made by LG and Samsung, and even though they aren't the best, if you keep using high quality media they both should do a good job. Now, if you want the real deal, you could get the latest model by Pioneer or Optiarc and stick it into an external enclosure of your choice.

Don't get a slim burner though: as you've seen for yourself they're junk.

Any recommendations of where to buy (cheapest place that's recommended?) or which models you recommend?

There are a few online stores listed in this post.

As for the cheapest you'll have to find out as I live probably quite far from you ;)

About the models usually the latest model is the best one to get, and usually you can find other users experiences with them at the cdfreaks forum

Ya, i cleaned the Sony and it still doesn't work sooo. i was looking into some of the burners and I'm very confused. I've never had to look for a new burner the Sony was a gift.

I looked up the Sony Optiac (?) and saw this one Sony Optiarc Black 24X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 12X DVD+R DL 24X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA DVD/CD Rewritable Drive - OEM

Is that good or what should i get? My main concern is DL Xbox backup burning. I prefer an external but i guess it's just as easy to put an internal in a case right?

Please help my budget is 100-200 at max. Do i need to spend this much? There's alot out there and I'm not quite sure what half of the CDfreaks guys are talking about.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Yes, that's a good burner. You'll also need to buy an external enclosure for a 5 1/4" external device with internal SATA interface (the external interface will probably be USB 2.0 or USB 2.0/eSATA combo). Installing the drive into the enclosure is pretty easy and probably comes with instructions.
