Miep Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 I have a cold so that may be why I made a mistake, and now can't understand how to get out of it. Please be gentle with your replies... I downloaded a win xp lite version from a torrent. I wanted to use it to make a disc to install xp on my friends old laptop so she can use it for school. But I must have chosen the wrong option because when i put the disc in, it looks like this: is it because of the way i wrote the disc? Or is it fine and I'm just not using it correctly? I also wanted to know if I can use those files to make the right type of disc, if that is wrong. I looked at making a bootable disc and my head started to spin a bit. I want to be able to install XP on my friends lappy. Thanks miep
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 The I386 folder etc should be in the root directory of the CD, so yeah, you did something wrong. Did you have 'Preserve Full Pathnames' enabled by any chance? There's a guide for burning an XP installation CD, take a look at it.

I'm not sure if i did, because i made it on another pc that I'm not in front of right now. I did read that tutorial, and that was when i started getting confused. How do I make the files (in the pic I put up) into a working bootable disc? When i started following the directions it didn't make sense... I couldn't save the boot.ima file to my pc, so where was i supposed to save it? Do you know what i mean? Head cold and trying to make disc... not a good combo eh...
LIGHTNING UK! Posted October 16, 2009 Posted October 16, 2009 You just need to drop the XP folder into the source box, ImgBurn should take care of the rest. If you don't have an original disc then you have nothing to extract the boot image from. If you don't have a boot image then you can't make a new bootable disc.
Miep Posted October 18, 2009 Author Posted October 18, 2009 You just need to drop the XP folder into the source box, ImgBurn should take care of the rest. So it will automatically make a disk that loads up and installs the XP? What do I choose? Write files/folders to disc? I'm just nervous because this is my last dvd disc, I'm too sick to go out and buy more. I already tried this once and got a disc full of files that doesn't load up, it just shows the files. So I just want to make sure it works properly this time. My friend needs her laptop to work. If it were just me I could take the time to figure it out. Sorry that I'm being a pain. Hope you can help. mmalves Posted October 18, 2009 Posted October 18, 2009 Follow this guide, use your XP folder as the source, go to the Bootable Disc tab as the guide says and, instead of extracting from an original disc, get the bootable image file here: it's called wxpboot.zip and you'll need to extract it before using. Select the extracted boot image file and fill out the fields just like the screenshot in the guide (Sectors to Load = 4 is the most important bit so make sure you did it right).

Thanks mmalves it worked perfectly!!! Miep
