Burning issues

I've been doing just great on my E-machines computer until it took a crap. No biggie, I thought I'd go ahead and just burn from my laptop and/or my stepbrothers E-Machines computer. I cannot for the life of me get it to work on my laptop. As far as my stepbrothers e-machines is concern, I was able to do it for a few movies and now it's doing the same thing that my laptop is doing. I figure maybe its the burner itself and should get another or an external but why would it work on my stepbrothers through like 10-11 movies and all of the sudden do the same thing the laptop is doing. Anyways, I'm sure you've gotten this question and I appologize for asking but if you could answer or direct me to a similar post I'd appreciate it. I've very new to this. Below is my log.

That drive is pretty old now, hence why it only lists 2x as a supported speed even though it's 16x rated media (many drives can burn it up to 24x!)

So whilst you could try a lens cleaning disc on the drive, you're better off just buying a decent external.

You could give the v1.02 firmware update a go though - http://www.firmwarehq.com/LG/GWA-4040N/files.html

Likewise for the other drive having issues, it's probably a case of checking for firmware updates, cleaning the drive or buying a new one.

I tried the firmware on the laptop but it did no good at all. Said it wasn't the same even though it was the only one available to download. THa's Ok, I have another question though. What external dvd drive brand do you recommend because I was actually thinking of just getting a new one. I had a feeling about this one but I couldn't figure why my stepbrothers wasnt working because mine and his desktop are the same except that his is actually newer. I'll try the cleaning on his though but like I said if you could recommend a good maybe even great external drive I'd appreciate it.

Since you need it to be external, get a normal sized burner in an external enclosure of your choice. External slim burners are just as bad as internal slim ones.

For the burner, the newest models by Optiarc, Lite On and Pioneer are all great burners.

ok, so stay away from any slim burners? why are the slims no good? ok, so what sort of features do I need to be looking for when it comes to picking out an external dvd burner. I need to know what to tell Santa Clause to get me, lol. Seriously and thanks for the help.
