Your burner doesn't support the blanks you're using. Try with Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden blanks and it should work.

Is it possible that HP discs aren't compatible with my HP computer?

Also, is there a way I can find out which discs are compatible? I'll try Verbatim/Taiyo Yuden but I'd rather not purchase online until I know that's my only option.

HP is just a brand name and thus means nothing. Your drive doesn't seem to like the 'CMC MAG. AM3' dye/MID that those particular ones seem to be using.

According to this thread - http://club.myce.com/f34/my-hp-dvd-740-doesnt-recognize-blank-media-when-its-time-write-203649/index2.html

... the drive is an OEM LG GSA-4166, maybe you can find a compatibility list for it.

You might be better off just buying a new drive as yours is getting on a bit now. The latest firmware dates back to 2005!

Your blanks use a dye/ink that's rated for up to 16x burning, and your burner says it only supports burning them at 4x, which shows it has poor or not support for those blanks. Not to mention that we know from our experience that CMC MAG dye blanks are rubbish.

That being said, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden are the best blanks you can buy, and if a burner doesn't work with them then you can be sure the burner is faulty.

By the way you should install service pack 3 for your Windows ;)

//edit: too slow again :P
