I have had a good look through the forums and so far it doesn't seem like anywone else has this problem.

Tools->Drive->Capabilities

Gives me an error popup saying "Range check error". Click on ok and it gives me the device capabilities window with Serial Number 'Unknown', Buffer size 'Unknown' and no media types checked. There is abolutely no capabilities of the drive. I know that the drive can burn DVDs and CDs. I haven't done any burning since I upgraded to Windows 7. I have the latest drivers for all my bits and have the latest firmware according to FirwareHQ.com

I first noticed a problem when it gave me the error "Device not ready (No Reference Position Found)".

I have tried "TDK DVD+R DL" and now have "Verbatim DVD-R DL". From what I found in the forums that was the recomended solution to most problems.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried with Verbatim DVD+R DL media? You might also want to look for the latest win7 drivers for your motherboard's chipset and/or storage controllers (hint: use SIW to identify them then use Google to find the latest drivers).

Do you get this 'Range Check Error' every single time you try and bring up the drive capabilities info?

The reason everything says 'Unknown' or is unchecked is due to that error - it's not actually querying a valid drive instance for it.

I'm unable to reproduce the error my end in any of the program's 'Modes'... I just tried it in all of them.

Yes. I get the "range check error every time. ImgBurn recognises my drive (by that I mean I can select it from the dropdown list) but doesn't seem to be able to talk to it in any way. I have tried "Unlocker" and Procexp to see if any other programs have a handle locking it. Always gives the same error.

and you've tried bringing up the details in every single 'mode' the program has? (i.e. write, read, build etc) ?

The program can talk to the drive ok - otherwise you won't see the device scan results in the log that you're seeing now (i.e. where it correctly lists the drive type).

I'm only concerned with the Range Check Error as that's an internal issue and I haven't a clue *how* you're getting it!
