timeless Posted April 14, 2010 Share Posted April 14, 2010 The basic jist of my problem is that for every burning session l am likely to at least one failed disk or more. My writer is a Samsung TSSTcorp SH-S223C (purchased within the last 4 months as my last burner died, it served me well it was a model or two down from the above) When writing and there are no problems it seems to run perfectly, and l burn at speeds of around 14x and 16x, however when problems occur l generally notice that the sound from my drive changes from the usual hissing of the burn process to a much quieter sound, sometimes when it does this it will keep burning but the speed will slow down drastically but on occasions it will just throw out a failed disk (tho it does ask me if l wish to finalise it before it spits it out at me) at these points it does seem that the device buffer fluctuates a reasonable bit but it does seem to recover quickly if the burn continues.. this problem happened in XP Pro, l assumed it was possibly OS issues as my install was playing up, but l reinstalled a day or two back with Win7 Pro and the same issue is occurring while burning on random disks.. (basically as previously stated, burn starts ok then part way at a random point drive pitch changes, burn speed goes down if it continues or just fails). As for the DVD media l use, l dont tend to buy anything other than DataWrite Titanium disks.. so that shouldnt be an issue, l was wondering if it could be related to the speed its burning at and if there was a way to limit it to a lower speed (l havent found the option, as lve only been using this program recently instead of Nero as its more lightweight so lm still getting used to things) Finally heres the logfile below (l removed the non needed parts of burns which completed fine and left in information l thought might be useful) any information that might help to fix my issue would be extremely helpful as too many disks are failing, and l burn allot. They're still using the cheapo 'CMC MAG. AM3' dye and that's the important thing here. If you want quality/long lasting burns, buy quality discs - Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden. AM3) (Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 18x) Burning at MAX speed isn't always the best idea either. 8x, 12x or 16x would probably give you better and more reliable burns rather than 'MAX' - which is effectively 18x with your drive/firmware/media combo. AM3) (Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 18x) Burning at MAX speed isn't always the best idea either. 8x, 12x or 16x would probably give you better and more reliable burns rather than 'MAX' - which is effectively 18x with your drive/firmware/media combo. l updated, my drive firmware, however it doesnt seem to flash higher than SB02 (tried twice, but the tool l downloaded just flashed it with SB02) lve also turned the speed down to 12x, however lve yet to download a full DVDs worth of stuff to burn so l maybe back with the results.. So if you download it from the link above once more, you WILL get the SB03 version will update later in the middle of uploading some website stuff atm Edit: finally using SB03 firmware, thanks finally got to test the burner, attached is the log.. one thing lm a little concerned (for lack of a better word) about is altho l have limited it to a speed of 12x for dvd writing l now cannot obtain anywhere near that speed, in fact while burning l hardly ever went over 8x and spent a couple of dvds burning at 5x, l guess the consolation is that l never dropped my usual one or two dvds that usually failed recently however it just concerned me that l couldnt obtain a higher speed since the firmware upgrade (as thats the only thing thats changed that could possibly affect burning. What you should do on the slower ones is look at the graph data file (via the appropriate program) - it might show the drive dropping the speed down (probably due to quality issues).
