I've burned a DVD recently with ImgBurn successfully with the same media and drive on this PC with no problem. I now have five coasters...

Old Windows XP laptop

Sony drive, Sony DVD-R media

Writing from a USB external hard drive

Have already tried rebooting, checked DMA (haven't deleted and rebooted), Only have 1.8 GB of C: drive free.

Any help would be appreciated.

Here's the log.

Setting the speed to 2x did the trick!

I had tried 1x and 4x and it failed, but 2x was the charm. Thanks! You're perspective helped me get it done.

I know it's time to upgrade, but if I can get by without spending a bunch of money on a new system or a drive right now I'm all for it.

Thanks again

Your drive is ancient and probably doesn't support the 'SONY16D1' dye being used on those discs. (Hence why the only 'supported' speed listed is 2x)

You might have more luck with some 8x discs instead.

The only speed that is supported is

I 12:25:24 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: SONY16D1) (Speeds: 2x)

Your posted log used the 2x speed, so that it worked now can be one lucky time. I wouldn't trust it to work the next times.

Spoke too soon. You're right. The last half of my video is all digital glitches studdering blocky skipping you name it...

I'm going to try finding some 8x discs that are compatible with my ancient drive.

Any suggestions?

Did you use the option Verify while you burned the disc.

IMHO opinion it's safer to get a new drive. Not certain that those new discs can be burned and then you have bought them unnecessarily.

I did not use verify.

I'm going to use a friends computer for this short term need. I agree that it's potentially frustrating and a long shot to find media that is going to be good for this drive.

Do you have a suggestion for a good external drive? I'm short on cash and don't have a good tower PC. Borrowing this laptop...
