Hi guys and gals,

I'm having some major issues with a new DVD burner I've bought, it's a Samsung SE-S084C Slim External drive (USB).

I'm trying to burn a 360 backup on AONE media (I know everybody suggests Verbatim, but they're way too expensive and I used to have fantastic results with my PC burner before I sold the whole unit) and so I need to change the booktype to DVD-ROM from DVD+R DL.

I enter the 'Change Booktype...' option, select 'Samsung' and it tells me that the Current Media is DVD+R DL but the current setting is 'Unknown (No way to query current setting)'. I change the option to 'Drive (For DVD+R DL Media)' to 'DVD-ROM' and it tells me that it's been successful, but it doesn't tell me ANYWHERE that I'm now burning a DVD-ROM disc. At the top of the information box it tells me that the current profile is 'DVD+R DL' and further down under 'Physical Information' it tells me that the Book Type is still 'DVD+R DL' even though I've just changed it and told it's been successful!

So, I start the burning and yet in the log, it says 'Book Type Setting: DVD-ROM' yet once it's finished, back in the main program screen (info box) it tells me that the last writes Booktype was DVD+R DL! I pop it into the 360 and it doesn't read, comes back with a 'dirty disc' error like it used to way back before I realised I had to change the Booktype setting!

What's going on??

A log would tell more.

According to the Internet, that drive should book type DVD +R DL media by itself.

Can you switch to read mode and insert the burned DL disc and copy the info in the disc info panel?

Just burning another, so I'll do that as soon as it's finished!

Did you verify the burn so you know that the burned disc is ok?

Posted

I didn't verify, but it won't do anything different will it? The disc still won't load on the 360 yet it seems to have burnt successfully as DVD-ROM according to the log.

Also, why does it still mention DVD+R DL as the Book Type under 'Physical Format Information'.

Posted

It's the information about how the disc was once manufactured. Last recorded shows how it is now.

Even if it burned ok, it could still be a joke and not readable. You could do a simple test and use the read mode to read the disc and see if it can be read and that might be the issue with your non reading problem in the game console.

Posted

Just ran another one and verified - and it didn't give me any errors yet it still wont play in the machine!

Could it be that the Book Type just isn't changing?

Posted

Perhaps post the log of the burn you just did?

Here's the log including the verification. I'm guessing it's just an issue with my media and the drive as it seems to verify as a DVD-ROM book type. It's mad as I've used the exact same media before and they ALWAYS play, just not when burnt on this writer - yet it burns and verifies successfully!

And 'mmalves' the thread you linked to didn't really help - unless you were hinting at the "don't bother posting" bit, which if you were, isn't very helpful!

Aone recently switched back to use this dye some months ago from the UME media code type. Perhaps your older, working discs had this media code? You can check by inserted an older working disc in the burner and use the read mode to see the media code in the right disc info panel.

Read it again, and this time pay attention to it. Your burn verified OK, which means you don't have a burning problem, and, as such, you're looking for information at the wrong place.

I did read it, I think you missed my less than subtle hint on the fact that I had read it. I asked if you were referring me to the bit about not posting as the 'issues' aren't to do with you - to which I said it was less than helpful of you to do such.

Another member here has been kind enough to help me out and give me advice and information, if you don't like it - shove it.

@Cynthia - thanks a lot for your help in this thread, it's very much appreciated and you're a credit to the forum. I'm kinda just going to put it down to the media and have some Verbatims on order. Thanks again for your help!

Hi Cynthia,

I'm using the same batch of discs that worked on my old burner - so it can't be the dye issue. I also bought some Verbatim's today and got the exact same issue that I've been having - the image burns, says it's DVD-ROM but won't play, I've even tried with back-up images I know have worked previously with other burners.

I'm completely stumped!

I've even tried burning at 1x and 2.4x speeds but I get an error message about a speed mismatch and it writes at 3x.

Posted

You can only burn those discs at the shown speeds at the end of the line: 3x, 4x, 6x

I 20:06:28 Destination Media Type: DVD+R DL (Disc ID: RICOHJPN-D01-67) (Speeds: 3x, 4x, 6x)

You can try to select any speed you want the disc will be written at the closest speed allowed on that mid. That's why you get speed mismatch

Find an existing burnt disc that works (actually test it!), make an image in Read mode and burn a new copy in Write mode.

If it doesn't work (and you've done everything correctly) then your drive must just be burning in some odd way that the machine can't handle. If it does work then you know your drive/media is not to blame and the thread mmalves linked you to has all the answers.

Sold the burner on eBay and have bought an Optiarc and a SATA enclosure as recommended by MMalves in another thread!

Will test that when it comes!

And the plot thickens.

I've been out and bought an Optiarc AD-7240S and a good SATA to USB enclosure. I've flashed the drive with the modded firmware as suggested here:

http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=12099

I've burnt a backup on a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc at the lowest possible speed (4x apparently for this drive) and the game STILL won't load in the 360 even though the book-type is changed to DVD-ROM during the burn and everything looks fine (aside from the 'Device Buffer' constantly dropping from 96% to 6% every 30 seconds or so).

I'm just completely lost. This is now 3 burners I've tried to burn with and although they're burning successfully and changing book-type to DVD-ROM they're still not loading!

It's not even my 360 as I had burnt backups on my desktop Lite-On drive up until a few weeks ago and all worked, and still work, perfectly fine.

Does anybody have any ideas at all? I just don't understand what the hell is going on.
