mrsussex Posted March 15, 2011 Share Posted March 15, 2011 Hi, I'm new here and I am hoping you can help solve my problem, which may be connected to this posting: http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=16272 System: Dell Studio XPS 1645 i7 1.6ghz laptop 4gigs RAM, 500Gb HD Optiarc 7640s dvd writer Dual boot install: Ubuntu 10 32bit and Win 7 64bit, all up to date and using GRUB boot loader VSO Copy2DVD, Microsoft burning software, Nero, ImgBurn and CDBurnerXP (all failing) I am trying to burn both ISO and general files to disc. The software says the burn is successful, but when I put the disc back in Windoze reports it as being blank. However, even though W7 sees them as blank, it won't let me write to them again - even if they are re-writable discs! I can see that the burn has taken place on the disc by the discolouration that is apparent on the surface. This is happening with CD-R, DVD-R and DVD-RW disc of different brands and it doesn't matter if they are ISO or normal files. I have tried different file sizes, but they all come out the same. All the discs I am experimenting with have been used without any problem whatsoever in this burner before. This problem became apparent after my machine was infected with the TDSS rootkit which caused so much damage that I ended-up re-installing Win7 and Ubuntu - since this re-install I have not been able to burn a disc even though I have tried using the built-in MS burning software, Nero, VSO and CDBurnerXP. All fail in the same way, i.e. reporting a successfull burn but then appearing as a blank disc. I am certain that the drive is ok, it worked ok right-up to the re-installation of the OS's (unless the rootkit has done something to the firmware, but I have already re-flashed it with the up-to-date firmware to no avail) To date I have tried: Installing fresh Win7 on a fresh HD and trying to burn discs before and after updates. Rolling-back the BIOS and then flashing it-back up-to-date Using the burner in Linux Re-flashing the burner firmware with the current firmware package (I can't find an older package to roll-back to) Various burning software packages Burning at slower speeds Tried and tested discs and a pack of new, never used before discs. All of the above give identical results - and a massive pile of coasters! I have been trying to solve this through the forums on Majorgeeks and Toms Hardware, but with no luck. It was see the post mentioned above that gave me hope - his problems seem very similar and lay in the drivers which is where I think my problem is (although I can't explain why Linux is failing in the same way, must be a bios or firmware thing I think). I have Googled EVERYTHING, and although I can find lots of people with the same problem, I can't find any solution. There does however seem to have been a spate of them recently, but I don't know if thats relevant) A couple of other strange things are: The keyboard eject button does not work except during boot, before Win7 has loaded. Right clicking on the dvd drive in windoze explorer and clicking eject fails. Using the the eject button in DVDInfoPro WORKS!!?? The log called "Failed Write with io debugging log" seemed to enter a perpetual loop and continued writing to the log forever. I can't believe all the agro I've gone through to solve such a simple problem, what a berk! I've posted the logs here anyway, in case you are interested or can see any other issues. Can I ask two questions? Why did my burner suddenly decide to fail with the same discs, indeed, the same pack that it has been happy with for over a year? And, which DVD cleaning system do you recommend for cleaning the burners' lens? I have tried these things on a few occasions previously, but they have only ever made the problem worse. Clearly, there is some black magic in this DVD burning process - and you are the master wizard!
