I had an improperly formatted BD-R 50 disc which I decided to reformat in my new Pioneer BDR-260. I got a "FormatDisc(FT: 0x31, FST: 0x02) Not Supported!" error then it went on to zeroing sectors - does that mean the format failed or has ImgBurn just completed the bad format?

Those just means the 'full certification' bit isn't supported by your drive - perhaps because spare areas have been disabled.

Zeroing sectors is normal when 'format properly' is enabled.

Did the format complete OK though? It took just a few seconds then went straight to zeroing sectors.
