Amanita103 Posted August 23, 2011 Posted August 23, 2011 I'm trying to burn a large avi file as data to DVD for playback on my computer with VLC Media Player. The file plays fine from the HDD. The specifics: Film name: Seven Samurai Format: AVI Runtime: 3hr 27min AVI file size: 4,672,526,336 bytes = 4.35GB Subtitle .srt file size: 85,393 bytes OS - WinXPSP3 up to date. Burner: Samsung SH-S202J Media: Taiwan Quality Verbatim 16X 4.7GB DVD+R Disc Free Space: 4,700,372,992 bytes = 4.377GB Have been excellent, best I have on hand. ImgBurn v2.5.0.0 EZ Mode Picker - Write files/folders to disc I've been purging my HDD of video by putting the AVIs onto 4.7GB DVD+R discs (Taiwan Verbatims) as standard data files. No problems with 4-6 vids per disc depending on file sizes (650MB - 1500MB) until I hit this one. I figured that this would be great since it's so long a film I could leave it AVI and it would fit on 1 DVD-5 disc. I'm now 4 bad discs into this and can't find a solution. The first 3 were made using Imgburn's recommendations - something to the effect, "You are burning an .avi file to disc root so we assume you are trying to create a DVD video. The recommended file systems for this type is ISO9660 + Joliet. Do you want us to change the settings for this option?" to which I answered - "yes". All 3 discs were unreadable and upon exploring the avi size on the DVD was something like 4,240,000,000 bytes so it was obvious something wasn't working. I searched the net including these forums for an answer and it was explained that ISO9660 and Joliet were only suitable for files 4GB or less and if the single file was larger than 4GB you had to use UDF. Great I thought. I never claimed to be very knowledgeable about DVD burning so I learned something. Tried a 4rth burn setting the file system to UDF 1.02 only. ImgBurn still popped up the recommendation that an .avi disc should be ISO9660 + Joliet. This time I refused and directed it to use UDF1.02. Burn went normal and was announced to be "successful". Still didn't work. Disc is unreadable by VLC and XP shows the 2 file names on the disc but their size is reported as *blank* = no info. Disc shows to be full and finalized. This is even stranger than the ISO9660 burns where I could at least see the file sizes in Explorer. I'm going backwards, it seems. This problem has probably been addressed 100 times but I cannot find it. Also, will the .srt subtitle file work just like it does from the HDD? Can anyone point me in the right direction? It's probably simple and I've screwed up somehow. log file: I 21:23:14 ImgBurn Version 2.5.0.0 started! Amanita103 Posted August 23, 2011 Author Posted August 23, 2011 Update ImgBurn. Update the firmware on your drive to the latest version - SB03 - http://www.firmwarehq.com/Samsung/SH-S202J/files.html Verify your burns. Try the UDF disc after a reboot and use 'Media Player Classic - Home Cinema' rather than VLC. Thanks for the quick reply. I just pulled the UDF disc out of the trash and rebooted. Lo and behold the thing plays great and Win. Explorer shows all the file information correctly. That drops the bad disc count down to 3, all attributable to my lack of knowledge. No hardware/firmware/software issues. To think I was throwing out a perfectly good disc due to a lack of a reboot. I haven't updated the drives firmware because the Samsung update logs showed that the new firmware was for minor additional "features" - something like a Samsung splash screen, etc. Nothing that was performance enhancing/modifying. I will update ImgBurn to 2.5.5.0 as your logs show a lot of functional modifications/enhancements. I know you're busy, but if you've the time could you write a sentence or two why a reboot was necessary as you rapidly nailed that diagnosis so you must be familiar with this glitch. In any event, thank you; you saved me a disc and your software is very much appreciated by a former NxxO sufferer. Amanita
