Haggis Cat Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 After reading through a few threads the problem appears to be just that (Topic Title), after I "Full Erase" the disc I get this error and it never did finish. (Format Failed PNG) The thread that I read said it was either the disc or the burner, I would suspect the disc, since when I first tried to format it, it would not work because my LG burner needed a firmware update. I am thinking that the failed format may have corrupted some sectors. The other night I went to burn a set of healthy ISO files of the movie "Zoo Keeper" and the verification failed about half way through and again on the second try after formatting again. So I tried using Windows to repair any bad sectors and having never tried this I don't know how long this process would take, but it finished in less then a minute and then I used Windows again to format the disc ounce more. When I went to use Image Burn to burn Zoo Keeper (third try now) it said the disc was not empty and it formatted it ounce again ??? This time around it successfully burned verified and all is well. Did Windows repair the sectors ? Who knows, but I don't trust the disc and I intend to buy a few new ones. Any comments at to what is going on here is much appreciated. Thanks
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 If the drive reported an error when attempting to do a full erase on the disc, there's something it doesn't like about it. At that point you could try a 2nd and 3rd time. If they all fail, write the disc off and get yourself another one.
Haggis Cat Posted November 30, 2011 Author Posted November 30, 2011 (edited) Thanks, it did this the first time when I tried to gain space to burn a very large movie (49.6 GB), but it worked the first time around (the burn that is, not the erase)I just ignored the error and continued, but it appears to be getting worse. I think will contact Verbatim and see if they will send me a new one, better the 14.00$ dollars in my pocket then in theirs, you're supposed to get 1000 rewrites on it. LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 30, 2011 Posted November 30, 2011 Varbatim's BD-RE DL discs are quite new to the market. The GGW-H20L is quite old now and would have only gained support for the MID in the most recent firmware - as such, it probably hasn't had a chance to mature yet. Hopefully a new disc will solve the problem, but you shouldn't be totally surprised if it doesn't.
Haggis Cat Posted December 1, 2011 Author Posted December 1, 2011 I hope it's not the LG Burner as it was quite expensive at aroung 300.00 Can. dollars. All this has come about because of the closing of Block Buster here in Canada. The only video store left is 1/2 hour drive away and they don't have a seven night rental. That means if I want to watch a movie on Friday, Satuday and Sunday night I would have to be driving back and forth or rent them for the 3 days at six bucks a shot, that equates to 54 dollars ! So I rent what I want and save all the movies to the hard drive (thanks for Any DVD HD !!)and play them when I want. A virtual drive almost works but none of the Blu-ray playing software can strem the video properly for the frame interpolation feature to work on my projector. So far the only thing that works is to burn the movie(s) and use my stand alone player. Right now I am bugging Cyberlink, Arc Soft and Corel with the problem and the only one who has respnoded is Corel _ sort of. It's all very frustrating.
Haggis Cat Posted December 10, 2011 Author Posted December 10, 2011 The new Verbatim BD-RE DL worked great. I didn't format it with Windows but used Imgburn directly. Interestingly it did not do a quick format, but deleted the entire disk and filled all the sectors with zeros. Maybe that's what went wrong with the first disk, is a I just did a Windows quick format and the fact the LG burner needed a firmware update. The first disk seems to be working well now too, it's still a bit of a nail bitting experience waiting to see if any errors come , but so far all seems well. The ironic thing here is that I got Cyberlink DVD to play with the frame interpolation feature enabled using Virtual Clone Drive. I tried K-lite, but it did not work at first and after more research I found I simply had to reinstall Cyber DVD10 to k-Light to see the codecs. Thank You very muck Lightening for your time and help, it's very much appreciated. I will continue to experiment with things and if I find something that may help others I will post it here.
Haggis Cat Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 (edited) So I bought 2 more Verbatim BD-RE DL's, one burned perfectly through the whole process and the other one would not complete the total erase, it would get 49% into the erase and there was a bad sector, the whole process stopped, tried again with the same result. So I just went ahead and formatted it, used Windows disc repair to fix the bad sectors ( don't know if that's even doing anything since it completes the process very fast)It had to be formatted again in Windows before it would let me use the repair utility, I found this strange. After all tImbuingburn successfully erased and zeroed the entire BD, after which the movie burned verified successfully. Is it the LG burner or Verbatim's disc's or both ? Is using Windows repair actually doing anything or is it coincidence that it worked the third time around ? I know you (Lightening UK) did mention earlier that the LG burner is old, but I don't understand why one disc worked and the other gave troubles. I would have thought that it would either would work or it wouldn't. I am going to try a Sony BD next. I have had problems with Verbatim before. Thanks for reading and your help !
