Can't burn DVD iso image to different brand DVD

I'm having a weird problem with iso images, I hope that somebody here understands what is going on!

 

Here is the scenario. I record video from a Sony videocam on to DVD using a high quality Pioneer standalone DVD recorder/player. I feed the videocam analog out to the analog in of the DVD recorder. Works great, I've been doing this for years. I then make an ISO image backup of the DVD to PC hard disk using ImgBurn. So far, so good. I can play the iso image form hard disk using DVDShrink, and I can copy the iso image to another TY DVD.

 

I recently tried to make DVD backups of the iso images from my hard disk. So the lifecycle is:

 

Videocam -> Yaiyo Yuden DVD using Pioneer recorder

Taiyo Yuden DVD -> iso image on PC hard disk using ImgBurn

iso image from hard disk -> backup DVD using ImgBurn

 

So here's the weird bit. If the backup DVD is also a Taiyo Yuden, it works just fine. However, if I burn the iso image to a TDK DVD, the TDK DVD is unreadable. The drive does not recognize the disc after burning. I've tried this about five times with different iso images, same result. I've tried upgrading ImgBurn to the latest release, same result. Does anyone understand why I cannot copy a Taiyo Yuden iso image to a TDK DVD?

 

(Please don't suggest "The TDK DVDs are all bad" - they are not, I can burn videos from files to these TDK discs, including videos processed by DVDShrink using ImgBurn and they all work just fine. The only TDK disks that have failed are the five onto which I tried to ImgBurn an iso copy from a T-Y original DVD. :-) )

 

Another clue: over the past year, I have made backup copies of dozens of older TDK DVDs using ImgBurn with no problem, transferring

TDK -> hard disk iso -> T-Y

 

Log is below. It shows an apparently successful burn of the iso to DVD, but the verify cannot read the DVD. Any clues are appreciated! Note that when I copied the T-Y DVD to hard disk iso, I gave the iso file a real name (not "LOGICAL VOLUME IDENTIFIER.ISO"). Could this be a problem?

It looks like your drive has problems burning the cheapo 'CMC MAG. AM3' dye TDK discs, that's why the Verify operation then fails.

 

All I'd suggest is that you try the other supported write speeds on that media, one of the other ones (4x, 12x, 16x) may produce a better quality burn than the one you're currently using (8x).

 

Cleaning the drive with a cleaning disc may also help.

 

What you're burning to the disc makes no difference. To a drive, data is data.

 

Therefore, what you said below makes no sense.
