PMA Update Failure with BD-R - again but different

Hello. That's my first posting on this forum. Forgive me any language mistakes - I'm Polish.

I have some issues with BD-R burning - not quite sure, but could be connected with imgburn.

I believe that users of this board are most experienced, and could provide me some extra information.

Back to the problem...

My Burner:

Optiarc BD RW BD-5730S 1.02 (Slim SATA) in USB 2.0 Enclosure.

Preffered disc:

BD-R Platinum 25GB (Disc ID: CMCMAG-BA5-000)

OS: Windows 2003 SP2 with IMAPIv2.0

In about half of my burns I get famous error at the end of write process

"Synchronise Cache Failed! - Reason: Program Memory Area Update Failure"

The disc in unreadable after this...(burning data only)

I've read most advices related to this error, tried option - enable "Don't use Immediate I/O", enable "Finalize Disc - Ignore Errors", disable "Finalize Disc - Auto Retry", but the problem still persists...media is unreadable.

I doubt it's media related problem...when such error occurs, I can go to "Tools->Drive->Close->Disc" I get an error about invalid field in cdb - no reaction from burner, but when I close pop-up window there is something going on - can notice some noise from burner followed by disc spin-up...and guess what - it's quite amazing but media becomes readable...verify goes OK.

I tried connecting drive to USB2.0 and 3.0 controllers, different burning speeds - no impact - error persisted...

I look forward for any suggestions and ideas how to solve this PMA Failure issue.

Please post the log - as per the pink box up the top :chair:

The program performs that 'Tools -> Drive -> Close -> Disc' process by itself (4 times in total with retries!) so doing it manually shouldn't make any difference.

Your problem is most certainly a drive/firmware/media combo issue. Slimline drives are rubbish at the best of times, even on DVD, and burning BDs is more difficult.

That's kind of weird...I can manually retry 10s of times at the end of burning, but media is still unreadable in the end...

But when I reload that disc, and repeat closing operation from "tools" media becomes readable...

One more thing - at the moment when this "synchronizing cache" error occurs I can hear few loud, unusual "clicks" from burner.

Any suggestions?

Is it worth trying to choose different I/O access interface - I don't know how it impacts write process.

Quality of this particular optiarc drive is not as bad in my opinion.

At the moment I can agree that it could be combo of USB to SATA controller/drive/media related problem...but still it's not so obvious because sometimes when I burn same project second time (during the same burning session), it completes without any error - and media is instantly readable.

If you eject + reload the disc before attempting to 'close -> disc' it again manually, that could explain for the difference.

The point I was making is that it's the same function (bit of code) being called both times.

If your burns are hit and miss, you can either just live with it and do what you have been doing or you could consider buying better discs that the drive can burn properly 100% of the time. I don't know if you've tried it but even just burning at 4x could make the errors go away. The drive may do a better job at 4x than it's currently doing at 2x.

The I/O interface makes no difference to your drive's ability to burn - which is of course an internal process.
