MichaelM Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 hello i decided to try burning at 2x speed on imgburn with blu-ray's when i noticed that recently i've had a small handful of faulty burns with bd's at 4x. they were burned over the course of a couple of months. but since then i've had no problems. but i wanted to be sure that i never have that problem again. so i asked some friends who use Imgburn to burn blurays and they suggested burning at 2x and when i asked if it's necessary to verify they said no. They said to just check the disc by scanning some chapters and playing some of the extras to see if they work or just watch the disc in its entirety. I use Verbatim BD-R DL 4x or Verbatim BD-R 4x for single layer. so i don't think it's my blanks. And when i burn bd's on imgburn i always make sure that software that doesn't need to be running isn't on and that there's no downloads going on. Last night i tried my friends advice at burning at 2x and without verify and i got this log: I 22:14:53 ImgBurn Version 2.5.6.0 started! Blu-ray blanks as we know aren't exactly cheap... thanks in advance.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 Performing a (successful) verify operation proves the disc is 100% readable in the drive that just burnt it. My advice would be to ignore your friends and let ImgBurn do it's *full* job. If you then want to double check the disc by trying it on your intended playback device then so be it. The 'VERBAT-IMd-000' dye/mid is rated for 4x burning but the only way you'd know how well your drive can burn them at that speed (or any speed) is to do some disc quality scans - for which you'd need a LiteOn blu-ray drive and something like Opti Drive Control / CDSpeed. If you're getting bad burns at 2x and 4x, you might want to start looking at getting some different discs (perhaps the 2x or 6x versions of the Verbatims) or doing something with your drive (cleaning it or replacing it).
MichaelM Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 hey lightning thanks for the speedy reply. i have some questions i'd like to ask you. i forgot to mention that i've always used the verify feature with my BDs until i tried the two burns mentioned above. what i don't get is how that small handful of discs that i burnt months ago that i also mentioned above were faulty. i burnt those at 4x and used verify and yet they still were faulty. you say my verbatim media is rated for 4x. so that means i can only burn at 4x on that type of blank correctly? on the actual discs it lists just 4x not 2x-4x. that's why i ask. i will try Opti Drive Control / CDSpeed. i found opti drive control in google but is cdspeed the name of the developer or another app? i just wanna be sure. isn't it true that for bd burning it's safest to burn at the slowest speed to get the best error free burn? like 2x? i've been using 4x speed for BD's for over a year now and i've had pretty good sucess with it. my last question is do you know by any chance how i got that I/O error? thanks in advance for your further answers.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 you say my verbatim media is rated for 4x. so that means i can only burn at 4x on that type of blank correctly? No, it just means that's what they're designed for. You burn at whatever speed your drive does the best job at. That varies by drive/firmware/media - hence the reason for burning a disc at each 'supported' speed and then checking the quality via the likes of opti drive control. cdspeed and opti drive control are both program names and the programs were made by the same person. Opti drive control is just the newer of the two. You got the I/O error because your drive didn't like something about the disc. The drive reports the error, ImgBurn simply displays it to the user.
MichaelM Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 hey lightning thanks again for the info. one more inquiry. i just looked at the site for Opti drive control. downloaded it but i didn't see cdspeed on there. is it discontinued? am i good with just opti drive control?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 cdspeed comes as part of the Nero suite. You can find it on their site or on various generic software news/download sites. You don't need both programs though, ODC will do. Notice I did state you need a LiteOn Blu-ray drive to perform the quality tests though, not all drives are capable of it.
MichaelM Posted March 27, 2012 Author Posted March 27, 2012 oh ok. i will stick with ODC then. yeah i have a liteon bd drive as my second disc drive in my tower. but it's a 25gb burner. most of bd burns are on DL. will that be a problem with using that drive with ODC?
LIGHTNING UK! Posted March 27, 2012 Posted March 27, 2012 I 23:09:30 -> Drive 2 - Info: LITE-ON BD B LH-2B1S AL09 (E:) (ATA) Ah yes, sorry, I misread the drive's identifier for something from an old DVD drive. All of LiteOn's new BD drives (including the 2 I own) have iHBSxxx / iHESxxx type names. You should be good to go then
