cobra70 Posted August 22, 2012 Share Posted August 22, 2012 I burned an ISO over bd-re 25 with LG BH08LS20. Burning has happened. The disc works with POWERDVD. The same disk does not work on Samsung BD-C5900. If I burn the same ISO on a BD-R 25, the disc works with POWER DVD and Samsung Standalone. Taking the test with ISO and BD-RE 50, BD-RE DL works with POWER DVD and Samsung Standalone. I tried a Verbatim BD-RE 25 and a Sony BD-RE 25. Same result. Does not work on Samsung standalone. If it's playing the 50GB ones ok, I'd assume it should be able to handle the 25GB ones too. Maybe it requires the discs to be formatted with spare areas enabled (or disabled) ? Is the firmware on your burner and player up to date? To me, it sounds like you should be asking Samsung why their player won't play content on a BD-RE 25GB disc that works just fine on other discs. Maybe it requires the discs to be formatted with spare areas enabled (or disabled) ? I read that ImgBurn default format disks without spare areas. I tested format with e without spare areas but BD-RE 25 does not work on Samsung BD-C5900. Is the firmware on your burner and player up to date? The firmware on my burner is the last one. At this point the ISO could not be burned because they appeared to be too large. I created a smaller ISO and I burned it. For the first time, SAMSUNG read BD-RE disc. Does that translate to something roughly like - 'how do I recover the space that has been taken up by the spare areas so I can burn a larger ISO to my BD-RE again?' ? Ok... but in this way my SAMSUNG standalone will not read the BD-RE! In this case, I'm again to the initial problem. I just wanted to make sure I understood (correctly) what it was that you were asking. You have a choice to make. Either... you have spare areas enabled and lose some of the available discs space - but the disc plays OR you have spare areas disabled and can write bigger images to the disc - but the disc doesn't play I'm afraid you can't have it both ways! Well, I guess you could always buy another player that doesn't have the problem your Samsung one has. What was the problem with the newer firmware for the Samsung player? Maybe this issue has been fixed? If it hasn't, tell them about it so that it can be. Going by the sizes you posted, I'd say the BD-RE DL has been formatted with spare areas enabled. All the new firmware SAMSUNG always have reduced the potential of the bluray player and particularly the ability to read formats from a USB-connected external hd. If I decide to buy a new player would have a good advice for me? Ok. The BD-RE DL is really formatted with spare areas enabled. Now I try to reformat without spare are enabled and I burn a large ISO. The BD-RE DL works. Now I try again to format BD-RE SL with full spare area disabled. I will try to burn an iso and see if it works on SAMSUNG standalone. Stay tuned! Steps: 1. Formatted the drive without spare area. 2. ISO burned. The BD-RE does not work on Samsung. 3. Formatted the drive with spare area. 4. ISO burned. The BD-RE work on the SAMSUNG standalone. 5. Formatted the disk again without sparea area. 6. ISO burned. The BD-RE is still working on the SAMSUNG standalone. What is the difference between point 2 and point 6? The first time I tried to burn the ISO directly on a blank new BD-RE. Before burning Imgburn formatted, rezero and then it wrote the ISO (Consecutive passes without my intervention). In steps 5 instead I first formatted and imgburn made the rezero. Then, in the step 6, I burned the ISO! (Two different manual steps) Imgburn behaves in a different way? Maciej Posted August 25, 2012 Share Posted August 25, 2012 (edited) FWIW ... As far as I've been able to establish, the question of which BD-RE disk plays in which standalone is extremely tricky. For example, I have a standalone blu-ray Panasonic DMP-BD55 (an old model, I know), but with latest firmware nevertheless. Two or so years ago, I bought a few TDK BD-RE SLs (sorry, don't remember the MID), burned films on my PC using ImgBurn (and an LG BH08LS20) and they played back flawlessly, both in PowerDVD and on the Panny. But only a week ago today, I purchased a Sony BD-RE SL (MID SONY-ES1-002) - to my surprise, the film I burned wouldn't play back on the standalone (PowerDVD - flawless). I tried formatting with and without spare areas, etc. - nothing. Finally, I had a very good look at the instruction manual for the Panny. As it turns out, the unit doesn't support playback of anything below "version 3 of the BD-RE Recording Format", while the Sony BD-RE is version 2.1. Call me stupid, but only then did I realise why I had a problem. What I'm trying to say is that your player may have problems with certain disk types.
