Can no longer burn to DVD

I have been using ImgBurn 2.5.7.0 for about 7 months on my notebook PC. I have had no problem burning DVDs up until a week ago, when I suddenly ran into continual write errors. At first, I thought my DVD drive (SlimType DVD A DS8A5SH) was failing, but it can still burn CDs, and it still reads/plays all compatible media. But for some reason, it just won't burn to DVD. I use - and always have used - Verbatim DVD+R 16X, and DVD+R DL 2.4X. Browsing through the ImgBurn forum has led me to suspect a firmware issue, but I cannot locate an update for my particular drive. I visited the ASUS website to search for updates, but they all seem to pre-date my notebook. I don't want to randomly select a firmware version, as that is certain to cause more problems than it will solve. Any suggestions?

If it worked fine and now doesn't, assuming your media is still ok (good quality/condition and the same MID that previously worked fine), your drive is probably at fault.

Cleaning it with a cleaning disc may help but it could also need replacing if it has broken. Don't take the fact it can still burn CDs as a sign it *isn't* broken... that often happens - burning CDs is much easier.

Ah. Good thing I have ordered an external DVD drive, then. I had contacted ASUS support, asking about both firmware and a way to source a replacement drive, but have yet to hear back. Should I also consider switching to DVD-R? Truthfully, I started using the +R because that was what was available at the instant that I needed blank discs, and I trusted Verbatim's quality. My results were always very good, the only bad burn I got being due to user error. But, overall, is -R less likely to encounter errors?
