Bob_Michaels Posted September 3, 2012 Share Posted September 3, 2012 As referenced in the quote of the first post of this thread, I'm trying to find out how to change the booktype (from DVD+RW to DVD-ROM) after the data was burned (and in my case on a different writer). I can put the written disc in my writer and use the "change booktype" function (receive a "success!) popup, but I don't believe it actually writes to the disc until an image or files are written? The long story is as follows: I recently upgraded my OS hard drive on my main (Win7x64) desktop PC to an SSD. On that PC I had a SATA DVD writer (Samsung S203N). As part of the SSD configuration, I set the SATA controller on the motherboard to operate in AHCI mode as prescribed for optimal SSD operation. After doing so, the DVD writer didn't work properly (could not perform the booktype setting) as it did when AHCI wasn't enabled. Apparently this is not unusual, but my older motherboard doesn't have a way to run different SATA ports as AHCI or IDE - it's all or none. My solution was to swap in an IDE DVD burner (LG GSA-H10N) that can do some booktype setting without being affected by the SATA settings. The problem is that the LG can't do DVD+RW booktype setting (just DVD-R, DVD-R DL). What I figured I could do is take the DVD+RW's written on the LG to another PC (old XP, no AHCI) with the Samsung drive installed and use it to change the booktype to DVD-ROM. BTW, I want to change the booktype so that I can use the DVD+RW's in a standalone Panasonic DVD player. Since I don't burn the DVD+RW's that often, this setup won't be a major inconvenience. If there isn't a way to do this, I will either have to transfer all of my video files to the old XP machine and burn them on the Samsung and use it to set the booktype when the discs are written or put the Samsung back in the main (Win7) PC and turn AHCI off. Posted September 3, 2012 Share Posted September 3, 2012 AHCI mode on an Intel chipset motherboard with recent Rapid Storage Tech drivers isntalled should be able to support the bitsetting commands just fine... I don't know about other chipsets. Otherwise, yeah, you should be able to take a DVD+RW with its booktype set to DVD-ROM and burn it on the LG. My controller is Intel ICH9, which isn't supported by the Intel drivers (unlike ICH9R &ICH9R which are supported). Therefore, I just reverted back to IDE from ahci mode and re-installed the Samsung drive. I'm not sure I'm losing a lot of performance by doing so. Full bitsetting/booktype functionality is now restored. Just for future knowledge or in case someone stumbles upon this thread in future searches, what would be the techinique to change booktype on a DVD+RW AFTER the data is burned (assuming it is possible as was posted in the referenced thread)? Simply writing to it isn't enough and obviously formatting the disc wipes the data on it so you can't do it after you've written to it. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
