LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 Your drive is pretty old now, possibly too old to actually support the 'RITEK-F16-01' MID properly. Notice you have an 8x burner and are using 16x media, yet the drive only lists 2.4x and 4x as supported write speeds. That's quite common where a drive's firmware doesn't contain support for the disc's MID. It has to resort to a fall back/generic write strategy and only offers low speeds. If it has been working ok with 'RITEK-F16-01' discs up until now, try cleaning the drive with a cleaning disc and using discs from another spindle. If it still doesn't work, you can take your pick out of trying different (better?) spindle of discs or another drive.

It might be better to bring down the writespeed of the discs to 8x speed or lower if i interpret your answer right. A new drive in the laptop is also a very good suggestion. I will try a lower writespeed first if that is possible and let you know if this worked. Thank's for your time and interest. Andre
LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 13, 2012 Posted November 13, 2012 That's not quite what I meant.... Your drive is capable of burning DVD+R and DVD-R discs at up to 8x. The 'RITEK-F16-01' MID is that of a 16x DVD+R. Your drive claims it can only write to 'RITEK-F16-01' at 2.4x and 4x.... so something doesn't seem right. It should be offering 8x too if the firmware actually supports 'RITEK-F16-01' properly - which makes me think it doesn't. It doesn't matter what you attempt to set the write speed to, the drive will only ever burn them at 2.4x or 4x. Any request for a different speed will simply be ignored by the drive and the next nearest supported speed will be used instead. So 1x, 2x and 2.4x will burn at 2.4x. 4x+ will burn at 4x.
A Gerritsen Posted November 14, 2012 Author Posted November 14, 2012 (edited) You are absolutely right. I borrowed some dics from my neighbour and brought down the speed to 4x. The result was the same as the last 4 days,now i have wasted about 25 discs haha. The specs of the TSSTcorp cd/dvd TS-L532M must give 8 x dvd and not in this case 4x. Strange fact and that maybe declares the loss of the discs. I have been looking to find the driver or firmware but so far no luck, the HP Paviljon ZD8000 is perhaps to old already. So you need to find some discs use that have a MID on that list. Personally I'd just go for the Verbatim / Taiyo Yuden ones (MKM/MCC/TYG/YUDEN).

The problem i had isn't fixed bij Windows either,their 'Fix-it program didn't help one bit. I also have problems with my HP external drive so it seems. This one i have as a backup. Could you maybe look at the log and find out what is wrong there ?? I burned one disc in 5 minutes after that the device fails in writing the leadin. The list you posted is very helpfull. I used Tayio Yuden before and these were excellent, my supplier dropped these disc for some reason so i bought Platinum again. LIGHTNING UK! Posted November 14, 2012 Posted November 14, 2012 All I can suggest for that one is that you try burning at 8x instead of 16x. Make sure you try on a new disc though, don't attempt to reuse one that's failed - it's not a fair test. If it still fails on that, try cleaning the drive with a cleaning disc. You could also try enabling the 'Perform OPC Before Write' option (on the 'Write' tab in the 'Settings') to see if that makes a difference.

All and all burning dvd's becomes very frustrating haha. I let you know how this went but if you don't hear from me in 24 hours i probably threw the laptop in the channel. Thank's a lot !!

Posted November 15, 2012 Posted November 15, 2012 Software just configures a few basic settings (most of which probably mean nothing as you're burning to DVD+R) and then sends data to the drive. It can't damage your drive. It's the drive itself (chipset and firmware) that do the burning. Both of your drives are having big problems with the 'RITEK-F16-01' discs. It's shame you can't still buy the Taiyo Yuden ones easily. Are there any others you *can* still buy? For testing purposes, you'd only need a spindle of 10 or whatever. Even if you had to buy 100 and then just binned the 70 RITEK ones you've got left, you'd probably still be better off as you wouldn't be wasting hours and hours messing around with discs that keep failing to burn. I guess it all comes down to how much your time is worth to you?!

I make a mobile of the ones i have left or stick 'm to a scarecrow haha. Burning is kind of a hobby of mine because i don't have work anymore after 4 hernia operations. The best thing i can do about this problem is to look for a new and faster internal burner. I already took 'm out of the laptop and that's real easy. Whenever i have succes in burning again i let you know. Again i'm very greatfull for all your replys and help, much appreciated !!!!
