Burning 20% Coasters

Trying to sort out why I'm burning about 20% Coasters, regardless of Media. How does one tell if it's your Laptop, your Burner, your media or what? I've tried slowing down the speed, no help. Tried 3 different Media, so far no problem on my other computer.... but sometimes it seems to do find. Usually the 2nd burn is a coaster. I don't think the log tells us much to resolve this issue does it? ImgBurn tells me the operation succeeded, but they are coasters. You can see the imprint where it burned, but nothing on another computer but the .ini file on the disc.

I've burn a lot of CD's/DVD's on my Dell , perhaps it's wearing out?

Dell L1702x, Intel i5-2410M CPU @ 2.30 GHz 6 GB Memory 64 Bit. NVIDIA GeForce GT 550M 1 GB.

You should re-enable the 'Verify' operation, especially if you're having problems... which you are.

It sounds very much like the drive is reporting that is/has successfully burnt the disc, but the disc still looks like it's blank when it's reinserted or tried in another drive. Not a good sign :(

To figure out exactly what's broken you'd test the drive with some known good/decent quality media - so something from Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. If it still creates a useless burn on those, your drive is toast - or at least needs a serious clean.

You shouldn't really ever have to drop the write speed below 8x for DVD+R / DVD-R discs.

btw, there's a D500 firmware available for the drive.

Thanks for the heads up on the firmware update, I did that, probably not the problem. I first thought it was the Memorex cheapo's that was the culprit, but I had a few expensive Sony's and it burned two successfully and then the 3rd was coaster. I guess I should buy some that are reommended here and give it a try, as I burn several hundred DVD's per racing season and don't think I ever had a problem until not which was why I was thinking Memorex might be the culprit. I use them on my Dell Desktop and so far no problem though...

I didn't know if the cleaning disc's or kits worked or were really needed, so I'll read through any recommendations here and give that a try too. I imagine replacing a DVD drive in a laptop is not cost effective either when you really need to upgrade to another machine with a 3GB video card and 16GB of RAM to be happy. can't say as I haven't been happy with my Dell other than this though. Thanks a million!

Perhaps the Firmware update helped, it certainly performed much faster and the 1st burn, even with the Cheap Memorex was a success! I was wondering what was the purpose of the verify, you usually know if it's good or not besides taking twice as long to burn w/ verify on? Does it help you anylize? Great program! Better than any I've paid for.

Thanks

Tim

The purpose of Verify is to discover if the disc is actually fully readable and that all the data on it is present and correct.

A successful burn means nothing on its own. The drive can think it's been burning ok and yet you end up with a totally unreadable disc at the end of it - as was the case here.
