I/O Device Error and Cannot Format Medium

Recommended Posts

I'm working on backup archives for my physical Sega CD collection. Burned an absolutely perfect disc on my first try. I'm using Verbatim DataLifePlus Azo CD-Rs. This was before I installed new Windows 8 updates and made CUE files default to ImgBurn.

You're getting a windows error there and not one from the drive itself. Maybe it's due to an updated motherboard chipset or controller driver that's been installed?

Right click the drive selection box, click 'family tree', close the prompt and then copy + paste everything from the log window please.

Without seeing if the error you're getting is bogus or masking a real error from the drive, I can't say.

Did you try the 12.5 driver? You can get 12.5, 11.7, 11.6, 11.2 etc. via these search results - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/SearchResult.aspx?lang=eng&keyword=%22rapid%22&sort=Date&sortDir=descending

You could try at the other supported write speeds and also with Taiyo Yuden CDs (they're better).

It might even be worth trying to burn one with 'Test Mode' enabled and see if your machine still errors out when you do that.

I tried at 16X. Still the same.

I could try the Taiyo Yuden JVC discs. However, I doubt there's anything wrong with Verbatim Azo discs from Mitsubishi. I haven't heard of anyone else having issues with them.

What would the test mode do in this case?

It stops the drive from writing to the disc (turns the laser off or whatever), so it's more of a system test.

If you still get errors with Test Mode enabled, chances are it's the drivers or something similar.

If you don't, your drive is just complaining about the media you're using.
