Computer configuration:

ASUS F2A85-V motherboard, AMD A10 5700 APU, 4 GB RAM. Motherboard is all SATA, no IDE.

Two optical drives:

1) LG HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GH24NS95 (SATA)

2) LG HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GSA-H10N (IDE, connected via DeLOCK 61719 IDE to SATA adaptor).

 

The second drive has givem me problems today after working before.

 

A while ago l I successfully copied a few audio CDs (Read/Write) using this drive. Here are the last lines of a log for one of them:

I also wrote a few CDs using (FLAC) audio data. So far so good.

 

Today I wanted to copy a few more CDs and suddenly, what had worked before, now no longer worked. The process hung during the writing of the LeadIn. It was so badly blocked, that I had to kill the process. No log was written. The CD drive was still locked. Even after a restart it was locked and I couldn't get the CD out. I actually had to power the PC down and start it up again, before I could take my coaster out.

 

Then I swapped the LG GSA-H10N (with firmware JL11) for the same model, this time with firmware JL10. I tried again, and it hung again. I killed ImgBurn, so no log was written. Second coaster for the day.

 

I tried copying different CD, and now it worked:

Then I tried one more CD and it failed again, third coaster for the day. This time I didn't kill ImgBurn, instead I shut down and got a log:

Note that it hung 14 minutes writing the LeadIn.

 

Summary:

Before today I had no problem to write CDs on my old LG HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-H10N, firmware JL11.

Today three out of four attempts failed with this model, I tried two units, the one with firmware JL11 (one failure), the other with firmware JL10 (two failures, one success).

 

On the newer drive LG HL-DT-ST_DVDRAM_GH24NS95 I haven't had a failure so far.

I did a little more research:

  1. The blanks I am using are labelled "Sony", but actually made by Moser Baer India. It's a new batch, perhaps the drive doesn't like them.
  2. http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=18685 says that the drive may not report a failure early enough, so that makes ImgBurn hang.
  3. There is a firmware update available for the drive (JL12). Looking at the release notes, I doubt that the update will help.

So what's the best approach? Forget about the old drive? Or at least forget about using this particular media in the old drive?

 

Im using the old drive since it allows 8x write, and I prefer that over 16x for audio CDs. Perhaps that's just foolish?

Personally, I'd try burning them at 24x and if there's a firmware update available, do it regardless of what the release notes say it addresses.

 

If it still won't burn to those discs, either forget about using the drive with them and stick to using your newer one or try those drives again with some better (Taiyo Yuden) discs.

Hi,

thank you for your reply. First of all, I'd like to say that ImgBurn is fantastic software!

 

As I have two units of type LG GSA-H10N, I copied three CDs (same media) successfully (as usual) today on a PC where the unit is connected via an IDE-cable.

 

I suspect that the IDE to SATA adaptor is the cuplrit. I haven't had a coaster in many years, it only started again yesterday and only in the configuration where this adaptor is used.

 

So my question is: Do you have any experience with these adaptors? There are a few adaptors on the market using different chipsets. Mine is the DeLOCK 61719 IDE to SATA adaptor, I'd have to open the machine to check which chipset it uses.

Try bringing up the 'Family Tree' info on the drive - right click the destination drive box and you'll see it on the context menu.

 

It may mention which chipset is being used. Feel free to copy + paste the info from the log.

I wasn't aware of the "Family tree" and the all the other super-cool features you get by right-clicking on the drive selection menu. Great stuff! On XP I used DiskInfo, but they stopped development in 2008 and it doesn't work on Windows 7.

Anyway, the chipset of the IDE to SATA converter didn't show there, it's completely transparent to Windows.

 

However, I opened the machine and looked at the little adaptor. It's a:

Sunplus IT, SATALink, SPIF223A-HL022

 

So, does anyone have any experience with IDE to SATA adaptors and this one in particular?

 

As I said, I have a couple of (old) spare IDE optical drives. Now I swapped the LG GSA-H10N out and put in an LG GCE-8526B (CD-R/W only). I flashed the latest firmware onto it (1.05). Log says:

Surely it's not a native SATA drive. So I will see how I go with that.

Last night I attempted to burn two audio CDs on the (old) LG CD-RW GCE-8526B as follows:

  1. A CD from FLAC audio files (using Xiph open Codecs - http://www.xiph.org/dshow/downloads/). When writing the lead-in, a progress is displayed in percent. This disk burned successfully.
  2. A CD copy, so a CD gets read and a new CD is written with a CUE file that looks like this: FILE "Image.bin" BINARY. This time it didn't work. The process hung while writing the lead-in. Sorry, no log, since I killed the process. On the new burner that always works I noticed that for "binary" images, no progress is displayed when writing the lead-in.

So I note that writing a lead-in is different depending which type of data is written to the CD. Maybe there is some room for improvement when writing "binary" images.
