Weird things going on with a DVD...

For some reason, my DVD+R will only partially format through factory software (on the computer), and ImgBurn is unable to do anything with it. I initially had this problem when all of a sudden the DVD stopped allowing itself to have memory written to it during a System Image backup (I was doing it in a series of DVDs and it was the eighth). My OS is Windows 7 64-bit, and it is running on a very recently acquired notebook I have (an upgrade from a newer netbook also running Windows 7, but as a 32-bit version).

The odd thing about this issue is that the DVD+R disk is always recognized by the OS, and the total memory capacity shown is correct, but in both cases it is acting like there are two partitions on it: one small one (2 MB) that I can write on to it with and one completely invisible large one (the rest of the disk, which won't even register in the shell in the diskpart utility as even existing). One thing I find problematic, but will likely be of some help, is that although it does register the total, used, and free memory correctly, I cannot see anything that is already burned onto it. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if the data already burned onto it after the initial format was corrupted while the rest of it is not.

Another issue is that I am running into issues with the DVD is that it apparently has multiple sessions (3 to be exact) open simultaneously and I can't close a single one of them by any means, through Windows Explorer or ImgBurn. When I try to close the session that ImgBurn reads first, it comes up with this error message below:

I don't really understand too much of what's going on in this, but after reading this, I inferred that I should try to close the open track, and when I tried multiple times, absolutely nothing happened. I got a really similar message after trying to close the disc (for obvious reasons). A little bit of background on this would be a little helpful, considering that I'm not really familiar with the protocols used when it comes to CDs, DVDs, etc.

Here is the log of the program (direct copy/paste through the UI), which obviously note that the issues are not in things already started. At the mark 20:50:34, I had refreshed the list of visible disk drives.

Any ideas as to how to wipe the DVD entirely (file system and everything), even if it's with some other program? I wouldn't mind turning it into a blank DVD again like it came in the packaging. If I can do this, it would be awesome.

A little bit of clarification here: this should help with the identification of the drives (I tried them both)

  • HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GT10N A108-09: the drive built into the notebook (I am not entirely sure who made the drive, but it is in a Dell, which itself I can't easily find the model of)
  • TSSTcorp CDDVDW SE-208AB TS03: the external CD/DVD drive that I initially bought for my old netbook (which I used it for quite a bit more than netbooks are usually meant to be used for)
