I am trying to burn a FedoraCore5-64 ISO to a DVD-R. I have wasted several DVDs now and I am getting frustrated. (For kicks I D/L an ISO from another Linux dist and got the same error, so I don't think it's the content.)

The burn process goes as normal to the very very end as the buffer clears back to zero. The I get this:

W 23:06:06 Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - (0/2) - Program Memory Area Update Failure

Has anyone ever seen this before?

I doubt it's your drive but the media you're using is garbage. Try some Taiyo Yudens (if you can find them) or Verbatim -R media. FWIW, I burn Linux CDs and DVDs fairly often without any problems.

Deffo get decent media first before you replace the drive.

Actually, it apears now that it is a system issue. I spoke with tech support and they indicated that the test results inidcated a OS issue.

Sure enough, when I dual boot and run ImgBurner under Vista, it works fine.

I guess I need to check my system drivers next.

The media I am using isn't the best (Philips) but it was consistently working and now consistently failling.

It's odd that it should fail at the end of the burn like that.

That process is performed by the drive itself, not the program / OS.

If you're getting rogue error messages, it might be due to a bad filter driver.

There's a little tool you can get from www.bustrace.com (for free) that'll list all the filter drivers (i.e. which drivers I/O calls have to pass through) for a given drive.

Out of interest, do you always get the exact same error message, and at the exact same point (when it's doing the sync cache bit) ?

I have had this error a few times recently as well (Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - can't remember the description though). Could just be my drive dosen't like my media.

Yes, I do. I just got it under Vista too (which is an almost clean install) so I am back to suspecting the drive. For $30 bucks it's easy enough to get a new drive and I will know. :D

hhmm; Yep, that is suspect.

Manufacturer ID: CMC MAG. AM3

Okay, I re-read this thread in it's entirety. Yes, the Philips media is by CMC MAG so I will try changing that first thing after my vacation next week.

Shamus and IfCrule, sorry I didn't get what you were trying to tell me earlier. It didn't click...

I have never heard of Taiyo Yudens but I am sure I can get some Verbatim -R's.

If this is indeed the issue then it is too bad that such well known brands use such lousy manufacturers.

Thanks for all of the replies so far.
