richk Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 I am having trouble with the program hanging on various tasks, starting immediately after upgrading the machine from win7-64 to win8-64 then to win 8.1-64. I have uninstalled and reinstalled 2.5.8.0. Machine is based on Asus z87 deluxe (z87 chipset). I tried 2 different drives (Optiarc AD-7280S) Once it hangs (hard disk light on solid), I need to shut down the machine. The shutdown doesn't complete, so I need to press and hold the power button. There is nothing in the system event log. Imgburn log from the last failure, which occurred while burning a disk, avter writing and before cycling the drive to verify: I 13:41:41 ImgBurn Version 2.5.8.0 started!I 13:41:41 Microsoft Windows 8 Professional x64 Edition (6.2, Build 9200)I 13:41:41 Total Physical Memory: 33,357,092 KiB - Available: 30,971,172 KiBI 13:41:41 Initialising SPTI...I 13:41:41 Searching for SCSI / ATAPI devices...I 13:41:41 -> Drive 1 - Info: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S 1.01 (Y:) (SATA)I 13:41:41 -> Drive 2 - Info: Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S 1.01 (Z:) (SATA)I 13:41:41 Found 2 DVD±RW/RAMs!I 13:52:49 Operation Started!I 13:52:49 Source File: H:\install CDs\thinkpad\x1 carbon\win8\Applications - boot disk.isoI 13:52:49 Source File Sectors: 2,050,064 (MODE1/2048)I 13:52:49 Source File Size: 4,198,531,072 bytesI 13:52:49 Source File Volume Identifier: SR30A20400I 13:52:49 Source File Volume Set Identifier: 19e00000MS UDFBridgeI 13:52:49 Source File Application Identifier: OSCDIMG 2.56 (01/01/2005 TM)I 13:52:49 Source File Implementation Identifier: Microsoft CDIMAGE UDFI 13:52:49 Source File File System(s): ISO9660 (Bootable), UDF (1.02)I 13:52:49 Destination Device: [1:0:0] Optiarc DVD RW AD-7280S 1.01 (Y:) (SATA)I 13:52:49 Destination Media Type: DVD+R (Disc ID: RITEK-F16-01)I 13:52:49 Destination Media Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16xI 13:52:49 Destination Media Sectors: 2,295,104I 13:52:49 Write Mode: DVDI 13:52:49 Write Type: DAOI 13:52:50 Write Speed: MAXI 13:52:50 DVD+R Reserve Track: NoI 13:52:50 Link Size: AutoI 13:52:50 Lock Volume: YesI 13:52:50 Test Mode: NoI 13:52:50 OPC: NoI 13:52:50 BURN-Proof: EnabledI 13:52:50 Write Speed Successfully Set! - Effective: 22,160 KB/s (16x)I 13:52:50 Book Type Setting: DVD+RI 13:52:50 Filling Buffer... LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 What's the message in the status bar at that point?
richk Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 (edited) I decided to try something else and it still didn't work, but I may have a better message. The Z87 chipset supports 6 SATA devices and deals with 4 more through 2 ASMedia controllers. I moved the optical drives to the main (Z87) controller. At the same time, I turned off the hot-swap option for the drives. I tried to burn a disk from an iso file. It burned the disk, and showed the message "finalising disk" . It then stopped and the imgburn log shows the following: W 15:25:30 Potential 'WaitImmediateIO' Deferred Error - (55%, 0/3) - The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.W 15:26:00 Finalise Disc Failed! - Reason: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.W 15:26:00 Retrying (1 of 3)...W 15:26:00 Retry Failed - Reason: The specified network resource or device is no longer available.W 15:26:00 Retrying (2 of 3)...W 15:26:00 Retry Failed - Reason: The specified network resource or device is no longer available.W 15:26:00 Retrying (3 of 3)...W 15:26:00 Retry Failed - Reason: The specified network resource or device is no longer available. The machine no longer hung at shutdown, but the drive couldn't be used without a reboot. Edited December 2, 2014 by richk
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 You're losing the real error there, probably due to the drivers being used for the controller. You did well by putting the drive on the Intel one though, that's where it belongs. Try in safe mode and see if you get a different message.
richk Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 (edited) I did 2 things. Before booting into safe mode, I tried to verify the disk I had finished writing before it hung. I successfully verified, and got the "success" sound, but when I tried to exit the program, it hung, with the message "closing disk". When I shut down, that hung also. I booted into safe mode and the burn and verify completed without error. I tried to figure out what would not start in safe mode, but might interfere, and I decided Intel Rapid Storage Technology was a possibility. I disabled the service and rebooted. The program could verify but then it couldn't see the drive and the drive disappeared in Disk Management. Edited December 3, 2014 by richk
LIGHTNING UK! Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I'm sure that once you sort out your drivers, everything will work as intended. Which version of IRST do you have installed?
richk Posted December 3, 2014 Author Posted December 3, 2014 Version 13.2.4.1000 Taking it out altogether didn't fix the problem, so it has to be interaction with something else
richk Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 The problem turned out to be IRST. Yesterday, I simply disabled the service, but imgburn still failed. Today, I completely uninstalled it and things are good
