jim348 Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 After some 15 years of being a dedicated burner, I am at a crossroads and am having to ask for help after having installed 2 brand new Asus DRW-24F1st b ATA DVD burners.First things first, I have run Microsoft's Fixit.dvd.RNP.Run.exe thinking that there may have been a compatibility problem. There was some filtering changes but Microsoft came through with the statement that my 2 drives were ready to use.As of today, every burned disc is now a coaster. I have tried other software, namely Ashampoo Burning Studio 12 which I purchased 3-4 years ago. It's now gone to the internet bitbucket. I Uninstalled ImageBurn, then reinstalled it twice in the last 14 days. No changes were made to the settings, other than setting the speed to Max (16).So here I'm stuck with one of the highest rated burners, namely, ImgBurn v2.5.8.0 as my sole burning device. I installed it some 4 months ago and had nothing to say but slow down as the slowest my older burners would burn at was 8x. Much too fast for my taste buds. But every DVD came out perfect. I use 2 Md5 programs for checking every burn: namely MD5 Checker for the source files and MD5 Summer for the summary of everything in the directory/folder(s) being burned.I purchased the ASUS burners as I presumed the compatibility would be perfect as I've been running for the last 5 years an ASUS P7P55D-E motherboard, with 8G ram. The OS is Windows 7 Ultimate.Here's the bizaree part of each bad burn. It's always the last source folder listed alphabetically that shows bad sectors. That is to say, if I have 10 folder in a directory, it's #10 subfolder that both my MD5 progies eventually says its unreadable. Always!Secondly, the log files say that there are corrupted sectors on the Sony DVD.That's absurd. I can understand as I've had files fail because they did not pass the MD5 authenticity test. But the sectors were not bad.Originally, a week ago when I put in the burners, I began, as usual, to burn straight data folders with Ice's ECC recovery volumes filling up the rest of the DVD. This ECC recovery program is nothing short of amazing. My redundancy rate generally runs between 120-150% of the source data. So I'm burning some 2000-2100 mg of data with the remaining space of 2500+ balance of a 4.7 disc being devoted to Ice ECC recovery volumes. Therefore, I can recover the entire DVD not just an individual file. This is something QuickPar could never do. And by the way, for some 10-12 years, I've used nothing but Sony DVD-R. I have quite a few spindles full of Sony discs that are 14-15 years old and are still Perfect! DVD+R's don't work as they are not compatible with ICE's ECC system.I switched to converting the source files to an ISO a couple of days ago, thinking that whatever the problem is, this may make it easier being burned.No change. Every DVD has bad sectors shown in the last sub folder/folder.Being the last folder made me think that I have a buffer problem inside of Win7.So I started reburning with Cacheman 7.9 controlling the memory's cache files. Again No Change. I also installed WinISO to see if the ISO it created were close in side.They weren't. Still No Change in the validation process of the last source folder. So WinIso is now history also.So the problem(s) are now done to 3 categories: (1) Windows 7 Ultimate; (2) ImgBurn 2.5.8.0 and\or (3) the ASUS burners.As far as Windows 7, I'll put my money elsewhere. I run sfc /scannow every day after booting the bad boy up to the desktop. Always without any violations of any kind. If there were any, I would use Rollback Rx to revert back to yesterday in 10 minutes. I've always reviewing my Event Viewer for anything related to anything material such as hardware. There were problems in the past with the old burners, but now that they're gone, so has the notifications. I run an excellent spyware everyday also as I have a lifetime subscription to Super Anti-Spyware.Is my problem with (#2) ImgBurn? I'm at a loss. Is 6x too slow keeping in mind that my DVD's are maxed-out in size. But I've been burning at maximum (16 speed, not AWS), with a better percentage of successful burns, maybe a 20-25% rate of success. But that's a lot of coasters. I do not understand all of the settings within ImgBurn, so I leave them alone. Whenever I do have any error because of sectors, I have cleaned out the Graph Data Files in the user directory, with some success. Not always.I personally think it's still a caching problem, but have nothing to fall back on. Or is it the ASUS burners? I have used these Asus burners to burn a DVd Movie. It wasn't ImgBurn, but rather ConvertX to DVD. LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 15, 2015 Posted January 15, 2015 You can probably use cdspeed, opti drive control or dvdinfopro to test the quality of the burns your drive is making on those discs. Do so, scanning at 4x, and then paste a picture of the result. Ritekf1 aren't good discs. Ignore that they've got sony stamped on them, that doesn't mean anything and sony could choose any mid/dye they want - probably the one that makes them the most profit at the time.

After much research and poking around I was able to resolve my problem. It turns out that I had fallen victim to the infamous "C?\" invalid registry entry problem. The majority of my invalid registry entries were created by Adobe products, Quicken, and last but not least - Roxio! I have completely removed Roxio from my machine and cleaned out all of the invalid registry entries. Now all of my DVD burners work perfectly including burns to Verbatim 8x MKM-003 discs from UAE. Interestingly, I could burn DVDs on my "old fashioned" IDE DVD drive but not my SATA drives (SATA hard drives worked fine). Also, none of these registry entries showed up in registry clean-up programs or as error in Event Viewer! You can check for this issue by using Windows Regedit to search the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section of the registry for C?\ entries using the find function. These entries can be corrected by replacing the "?" with ":". If the invalid path (Data column) is part of an entry who's name (Name column) consists of thirty-two zeros then the entire entry may be deleted instead of corrected. Invariably these entries will be immediately followed by another invalid (C?\) entry with a valid sub-key name. In my case there were several hundred of these invalid entries. I was able to export the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE section to a file and use Wordpad to do an automated find and replace. The file can then be imported back into the registry (ignore the error warning at the end of the import as you are only importing part of the registry) Of course, before doing any of this always create a restore point and make a back-up copy of your registry!
