Growltiger Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) I am new to ImgBurn but have already burned a number of BD-R disks (single layer) with no problems at all. I have an LG BE14NU40 USB3 external recorder. I am using TDK media. But today I burned a disk and got several verify errors. So I threw the disk away and tried again. Same result. So I wondered if the disk was in fact correct and the verify was incorrect for some reason. I noticed that the read speed is very high indeed, the drive is noisy. I am configuring it to write at 4x and it was reading at about 11x. Q1. Is there some way to set the read speed when verifying? Next I tried the Verify mode. I was writing files, not an image, and it doesn't seem to support reading back files and comparing? Q2. Is that right? So I tried Verify anyway and it just seemed to read the disk to check it was readable. It read without errors. Q3. Have I understood that right? Next I ran a file compare program (Ultracompare) and compared all the files on the disk against the source files. No errors found. Q4. Any suggestions for what to think or do next? Growltiger Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 I tried another Verify in ImgBurn, setting the read speed to 16x and it read the disk with no errors. It is not clear to me why I would get errors reported from ImgBurn immediately after burning, while it now appears that the disk is both readable, and also the files are all correct. The implication is that data was being corrupted in transit while it was read during the initial verify. Perhaps try again with the original cable that came with the drive. I'm currently using a good quality but slightly longer one, which has always worked perfectly, both with this drive and with external had drives.
Growltiger Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Well that didn't help. I had three miscompares in the first two minutes of the verify. After 6 miscompares I abandoned the verify.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Have you tried with other media? A rewritable maybe? Problems like this are the hardest to do anything with. Keep using images and reverify anything that fails the initial one to see if the errors are in the same place. Make sure you reenable the option to compare against an image file or it won't be comparing the actual data on the disc.
Growltiger Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 I have not been using images. Are you saying I should use ImgBurn to make an image file, and then burn that, so I can keep repeating the verify stage? I will do that. (I ran a file compare on my last test, using UltraEdit, and this time it did find errors. At least that shows some consistency.)
Growltiger Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Might it be significant that the log reports the drive as "(USB 2.0)". It is a USB3 drive on a high quality USB3 port..
LIGHTNING UK! Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Yes, just for now, make ISO files of what you want to burn and then burn those. That way, you can use Verify mode to compare the disc to the image at a later date and not simply be checking the disc is readable. No, that isn't significant (it's purely cosmetic)... but mine had always showed up as USB 3.0 when it was connected that way in testing. I wonder why yours just says 2.0 ?
Growltiger Posted April 22, 2015 Author Posted April 22, 2015 Thanks for the advice. I built the image file. I put back the normal cable I use. I powered off and on the computer. Then I burned yet another disk. No errors. Verified it against the image again. Still no errors. So it is all working now. What I have learned is that it is best to take the extra time to make an image file, as you suggested. The problem could have been: - three bad disks in a row - usb port/driver malfunction - cable/connection problem - other computer issue that interfered somehow - the unknown something else I have had bad experiences in the past with USB, especially USB3, when copying files (photos) from card readers. There are numerous possible problems when doing that. Using a USB3 extension cable is an almost certain way to sometimes corrupt data when using an external drive for example. Some USB3 cables are low quality and are not reliable. I use a program called h2testw to test every new SD card/card reader/cable/port/computer combination, to make sure there are no weak links (including fake cards). Where does it get the information that says which USB version to display in the log?
