CryptoQuick Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 My Problem: I attempted to burn a data DVD, but the write speed fluctuated like the power on a Galaxy-class starship. The speed went up to 8x, then slowly dropped to zero. Then it went back up, perhaps a little higher, then back to zero. By the time the disc was finished, it had reached about 16x. However, this is not cool, because the disc failed to verify. I noticed this thread sounded sort of like what I was having, but the situation did not seem to be resolved -- http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=3049 My Situation: On the software side, I made the image using PowerISO (not knowing of those sorts of capabilities of ImgBurn), I used version 2.1 of this software on Windows XP SP2, and I'm also running a current version of DaemonTools, v4.08. (I'm wondering if DaemonTools is causing this problem, and its SPTD thing, and if I just exit out of that from the system tray, the problem will be solved... But I don't want to ruin another disc) On the hardware side, I'm running this file from a SATA hard drive, a Seagate 7200.10, a Samsung 182D (I tried it with k3b a while back, with poor results. I'm glad this program works. Oh, Windows... ). Also, I have an ASUS motherboard, a Core 2 Duo, and plenty of RAM ... oh, I think that's all you guys need to know. It can't be a bandwidth problem, as the Samsung is the only device on the IDE bus. My Log: I 01:12:02 ImgBurn Version 2.1.0.0 started! Shamus_McFartfinger Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Welcome to the forum. I 01:12:47 Destination Media Type: DVD-R (Disc ID: RITEKF1) (Speeds: 2x, 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x) This isn't a good sign. A few years ago Ritek made great media. These days they sell rubbish. Before pulling out PCI cards or attempting to find driver problems within Windows, I'd recommend finding some quality media such as Taiyo Yuden (-R) or Verbatim (+R DL) which will likely solve the problem. Most other media just isn't worth buying.

LIGHTNING UK! Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 You're on the initial firmware, you should probably go for a new one (SB04). http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=2265 As Shamus said, the media you're using is pretty awful (no matter what you think your experiences with it have been) and you'd do well to change it for something better. Drives slow down when they can't burn and they slow down when they can't read. Seems to me that you're experiencing both of these issues. The updated firmware may help but ultimately, you need to ditch the Riteks.

The updated firmware may help but ultimately, you need to ditch the Riteks. You're a sharp one. The firmware update helped improve things greatly. The disc burnt all the way, with minimal variance in the write rate, and it verified. Thank you very much. This will help me get by until I can happen upon some media of a higher standard -- Taiyo Yuden -R or Verbatim +R DL, eh? The log: I 03:24:24 ImgBurn Version 2.1.0.0 started! lfcrule1972 Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=539 The link above is for disc tests of that Ritek dye, personally speaking anything with a quality score of less than 90% in DVDinfoPro is not worth bothering with in my opinion, when you add the quality scores and the number of write failures experienced during the tests you begin to see why we don't recommend those discs.
