Msterbeau Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 I'm trying to back up a bunch of data to DL disks. I managed to burn two from Nero 6 but then it refused to do anymore. So I installed ImgBurn to see if it worked as well as advertised. So far I've made three coasters using Verbatim media although I had no trouble making a CD-R. In all cases I used the build function to make disk images to burn. Between the first two DL DVD's and the third one I updated the firmware on the drive. Msterbeau Posted February 2, 2007 Author Posted February 2, 2007 why choose max, choose the slowest and more than likely rated write speed of 2.4X If it didn't work at 2x why would it work at 2.4x?
kevdriver Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 Mstrbeau, Most DL discs have a dye formulation that allows a minimal burn speed of 2.4X. If you burn slower the dye may not pick up all the information and you could/will get errors. Irregardless of the rated speeds of DL discs, and I only use Verbatim +Rs, I burn at 2.4X to ensure the best chance of a successful burn.
dontasciime Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 If it didn't work at 2x why would it work at 2.4x? There is no write strategy for 2x on +R media. If the disc/writer shows anything above it's rated speed it's a bonus if it works and a curse when it does not. Those verbs disc's are certified at 2.4X only

Movie Junkie Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 I have a few questions. 1. When you're burning, do you have other applications running at the same time? 2. How long have you been using that drive? 3. Is the drive connected to the IDE channel by itself (as the master) or is there something else connected to that channel? 4. Have you had any successful burns with it? 5. Do you have another drive you could use?
lfcrule1972 Posted February 8, 2007 Posted February 8, 2007 Also this may be a faulty spindle of discs, it would be unlikely but not unheard of. Has this drive ever successfully burnt DVD+R DL Verbatims for say 5 or more discs in a row ? Looks like a few reviewers have seen problems with DL Media and this drive but nothing major: http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters.php?DV...p;Search=Search Do you have another drive you can check the discs with ? If not I would try and return the discs to wherever you got them from, and then if the new discs are no better RMA the drive.
Msterbeau Posted February 9, 2007 Author Posted February 9, 2007 (edited) I have a few questions. 1. When you're burning, do you have other applications running at the same time? 2. How long have you been using that drive? 3. Is the drive connected to the IDE channel by itself (as the master) or is there something else connected to that channel? 4. Have you had any successful burns with it? 5. Do you have another drive you could use? 1. No 2. Over a year. I've only very recently needed to use the DL discs, though. 3. The drive is now connected as the master on the IDE channel, with another hardrive as slave. I just did this though. Last week when I started this thread, the drive was by itself. 4. I burned a couple DL discs a couple weeks ago using Nero and a different media. Only one of those worked without errors. The other disc seems to work OK but there were errors that popped up. I haven't had a successful but using ImgBurn yet. I've had no troubles making DVD's or CD's. 5. I don't have another drive. Certainly not a DL one... Question: Does it matter WHAT I'm burning? I'm just backing up a bunch of files from my computer. Mostly digital photos and art. I've been making an image file (ISO) and then (trying) to burn it. Should I bypass the ISO process and just burn the files? Edited February 9, 2007 by Msterbeau
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 No it doesn't matter what you're burning. It also doesn't matter if you create the image first or burn on-the-fly, the exact same data is sent to the drive. It just looks to me as if your drive is having mega issues with those discs. In case you've got a dodgy batch of verbatims, perhaps you could buy another lot? You'll use them eventually anyway - right?! If a new batch still won't burn, there must be something up with your drive. As they're only about ?25 now, it's probably cheaper to just buy a new one than it is to keep wasting DL discs!
Movie Junkie Posted February 9, 2007 Posted February 9, 2007 I think that, as LUK said, drives being cheap you should get another burner. While you could have a bad batch of discs I have a feeling that your drive is the issue. It would be easier to try some new discs than it would be to change the drive so you have a choice to make.

Who makes a good one? (Drive) I'm trying to burn regular DVD-R's... it made one good one and then two coasters. I'm fed up with this crap.
LIGHTNING UK! Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 There are loads of good ones. It's probably worth taking a look around the internet and seeing what's been working well for people. Sony doesn't really make their own drives, they're rebadged versions of someone elses. I tend to avoid the rebadges and go for the REAL makes. I have the following in my PC at the moment: Plextor PX-760A LG GSA-H22L Pioneer DVR-111 LiteOn LH-18A1H Optiarc AD-7173A BenQ DW1655 I'm happy with all of them.
lfcrule1972 Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 I have the same Pioneer (DVR-112 out now tho) and BenQ as the boss - both good burners !
