MPAA Steals Code, Violates Linkware License

Written by Smaran on February 17, 2007

A blogger who wrote his own blogging engine called Forest Blog recently noticed that none other than the MPAA was using his work, and had completely violated his linkware license by removing all links back to the Forest Blog site, and had not credited him in any way.

Patrick Robin, a 29 year old web developer from South England, is the developer of an ASP-based blogging platform called Forest Blog. He distributes it freely under a linkware license, asking that anyone who uses it merely link back to his site where Forest Blog is offered for download. If someone wants to remove the links back to his site, they must purchase a license. A personal license costs 10 Pounds and a commercial one costs 25.

Amazingly, the MPAA seem to think they?re above ?formalities? like licenses and such. The MPAA blog, located at www.mpaa.org/blog_default.asp (currently down), was using Patrick?s Forest Blog software, but had been completely stripped of his name, and links back to his site. He only found about it accidentally when he happened to visit the MPAA site.

Clearly, there seems to be a lack of concern by the MPAA of others? copyrighted works. Therefore, is it unsurprising that their customers seem to have the same attitude towards their movies?

According to Patrick, it isn?t something new to find his blogging software being used like this. What he finds really odd is that an organisation whose goal is to ?protect? copyrighted creative works has no qualms in, essentially, stealing other people?s work. The MPAA still haven?t replied to a letter he sent them about the illegal use of his blogging software.

Ah it was Fred 2 I remember as your other avatar !! Reminds me of a presentation I did at a previous company. I was co-presenting with a colleague from HR using his laptop for powerpoint. Anyway I went first and had 30 slides in just over 40 minutes, when I finished my colleague stood up to do his part on Human Resources etc.

His presentation was 30 minutes and only 5 slides, after he reached the 5th slide he kept talking to the attendees and I was sitting at the back making notes for my next presentation. After about 5 minutes I heard a sharp intake of breath and looked up to see that his "specialist" screensaver of all the Simpson's characters in a cartoon orgy had appeared !! Left him with some explaining to do when we got back to the office

Red Dwarf - best ever. LFC - which episode do you think was best? Back to reality? Remember where they went to waxwork world? And the Gunmen one? Brilliant. Perhaps we should start a Red Dwarf thread.

Cartoon porn eh? Shocking... :innocent:

My favourite episode was probably "White Hole", it was just so random and funny with the time jumps causing the crew, especially the Cat to repeat themselves, it was in Series 4 and I found the summary below...

"White Hole"

Whilst trying to restore Holly's mind using a new technique called intelligence compression, the crew encounter a white hole in space. Succeeding in their experiment, Holly now has an IQ of 12,000, the problem is in doing so the crew have reduced her life expectancy to under three minutes. After battling their way through numerous locked electric doors using Kryten as a battering ram, the team ask Holly how to plug up the white hole. Unfortunately, it seems that the only way to seal the white hole and fix Holly seems to be a game of galactic pool using planets as pool balls.

Mmm Polymorph was a cracker too tho !
