Cannot Write Medium - Incompatible Format

Hi guys

I normally have no problems burning dvd's with nero, but it stopped working last week and i was getting 'illegal disc' messages, even though I was using the same TDK blanks as always. I got some verbatim blanks but the same thing happened.

I was advised to try ImgBurn so I did but am still getting error messages.

This is the ImgBurn log from today:

I see you have Test mode enabled, have you changed any of the other settings in the program ? Can I suggest you restore the defaults, via the Tools, Settings panel so we know there is nothing else going on here :)

Then try an another burn for us and post the log up. :)

Whoa hang on at the start of your log it says the source disc is PTP or Parallel Track Path, is this a Navigation DVD by any chance ? If so you won't be able to back it up cos all DL DVD media burns OTP or Opposite Track Path.

The disc you are trying to burn reads from the centre out to the edge and then the laser resets to the centre again and starts reading a second layer from the centre again. The OTP reads from the centre to the edge and then from the edge back to the centre on DL discs.

The thing that is confusing me is that it doesn't appear to be a dual layer disc as the source, does the source disc actually work ? It looks a little weird to me as it's reporting PTP

I agree the source disk is shite but he is also using Verbs Shamus :/

Guys, thanks for all your responses so far ..

I have previously had no trouble with dvd-r discs.

The source of the image was a Memorex dvd-r which I got in the mail; I have tried both TDK and Verbatim discs to burn the disc on both nero and ImgBurn, and get similar error messages.

None of the discs are dual layer.

The source disc works fine, I can extract from it - I just can't burn the image I make of it.

I tried it in test burn cos I have made about 10 coasters trying in write mode, i'm trying to not waste any more blanks.

I re-iterate that I preiously have had no problems burning dvd's; something seems to have changed in my PC settings to make this happen and that is what I am trying to figure out.

The lite-on dvd drive is only about 6 months old.

Any more suggestions would be appreciated?

Nothing on your PC should make the drive error out... after all, it's a bit of hardware.

When it's burning to a disc, there's just it and the disc - nothing should be able to interfere with that.

In case you've got some dodgy filter drivers installed, click 'Tools' -> 'Filter Driver Load Order'. Then hit the 'Clipboard' button and 'Paste' into a reply message so we can see what's installed on your pc.

Are you sure these are the exact same discs your drive has worked with in the past? That is to say you've not just moved onto a new spindle or whatever and you've not just updated the drives firmware?

There is clearly something it doesn't like about them, you just need to figure out what it is.

Yes, same discs, and have tried different ones (verbatim) as well.

OK, I deleted: File Name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\cdrbsdrv.sys ,

as I didn't even know what B's Recorder gold was.

I do use DVD43 so I left that one.

The effect of that was to remove the dvd drive from My Computer completely,

so it probably isn't the desired effect :).

Luckily I left the driver in the recycle bin, and after restoring it and re-booting

my dvd drive re-appeared in My Computer.

Unfortunately, it still won't burn dvd's. It still will burn both audio and data cd's , though.

I tried another dvd burn, this time at 8X, with a verbatim blank (now a coaster).

This is the log of the latest burn failure FYI:

Did you not just click the 'Delete' option within the 'Filter Driver Load Order' screen?

If it's just not burning DVDs of any kind, maybe the DVD burning part of the drive has messed up - is it still under warranty?

Posted

I know what you mean Dave, that is the exact same thing that happened to me. I didn't change anything from what i have been doing, just about 3 weeks ago or so it started and has not worked since, but will still burn cds or data disk. I had put in the topic, wont complete burn! It would be great if this issue could be worked out.

Nothing I tried seemed to make any difference, so I took the pc to the repair shop to be looked at.

The guy there disabled all running programs bar Nero, and lo and behold it worked.

He said that there must be a software conflict somehow, and suggested that I uninstall all

copyright avoidance type programs (ie dvd43 and dvd decrypter) and other burning programs

(including ImgBurn and 1clickDVD), which I did.

I have since been able to burn images and uncopyrighted discs using Nero.

The crunch will come when I try to back up a copyrighted dvd again; I will then likely have to re-install

ImGBurn or another similar program to be able to do so.

Apparently the same laser is used to both read and burnm dvd's; a separate one for cd's.

The physical dvd drive was not at fault, after all.

Hope this info helps someone else.
