Img burn Nec 3500AG Verbatim DVD-R burn error

I have tried 4 times but can not burn my movie using Nec 3500AG on a Verbatim DVD-R. In most cases the whole film is burnt but when I view it afterwards there is an error about 20 seconds in which makes my dvdplayer get stuck and then jump over about 20 seconds. I have successfully burnt the same movie on Verbatim DVD - RW many times. I use Imgburn version 2.3.1.0.

The update procedure for nec 2.1b firmware is rather tricky and I have valuable stuff on my computer.. can I just unplug all unnecessary cables to other hardware, close all programs and click the NECND350_v21B file and the firmware is safely installed? I am not sure about opening the computer and checking connections since I am a newby at computers. My soft- and hardware is rather old as well (asus cu sl2, pentium 3, 1GHz, 256 memory, win 2000 prof without service packs) but I hope this will not be a problem.

Also, if I save the audio and video_ts files to external hardware before I do this and something bad happens during firmware install, can I start burning my movies from these files once all software is reinstalled? I hope this will not happen but you never know..

I forgot to say that one of my five burns was successful, and apparently it must be a very small error since just 20 seconds of the movie is unplayable. I will try the Imgburn software update first before updating. I will edit this post...

They make it sound so scary... believe me, it's not!

You run the exe, select your drive (if you happen to have more than 1) and then click go. (ensure the drive is empty first)

When it's done, just reboot.

It's not going to touch your computers hard drive or the software on it, so don't worry.

the Nec drives are a snap to update I have a 3500 ,great drive .Do this right click the 3500 in the destination box in IMGburn and the last line is firmware update, click that , it shows your current FW, click OK and you'll go to the FW page use the 2.1b FW download it save it to the comp open it double click the 3500 2.1b and extract the file its downloaded as a zip after that a new qwindow opens double click the 3500 again the flasher opens and flash the drive re boot done

did you check to see if there was a disc in the drive ? Personally I've never had a flash fail . Close out anything that might be open that includes the window to the firmware page IMGburn everything thats open and try again, make sure the region is set .

BTW what computer is this drive in, also what did it say the current firmware version is. It could be possible that you would have to go to the computer manufacturers website if they installed their own FW

I tried again. no disk in drive, all programs closed with the same result. My drive is recognized as:

(HA:2/ID:0)_NEC DVD_RW ND-3500 AG

current version 2.16

update version 2.1B

what does set region mean? My firmware filename is (I got it from the address above)

2348_FW_ND-3500A_win21B

Shall I try some other firmware to download? Also I dont know if I need som kind of flash program to do this.

Your region is ...... well.... what region you are. :) The world is divided into 6 regions (technically 8). Your drive needs to know (for compatibility reasons) what part of the world you're in. Have a look here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

If you need help setting your drives' region - ask.

Sweden of course so I am in region 2. should I choose another firmware file for download?

Yes I need help setting my drives region. (Not that I think it is false since all dvdrw burns have been successful)

Firmware is region independent. (It works with all regions).

Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> DVD/CD-ROM Drives

Right-click on your drive and select Properties

Click the Advanced Settings tab

Select Sweden :)

Hit OK

Reboot

Done

download the 2.18 and try that as i wonder why it is underlined

maybe you can only go to 2.1b from 2.18 and not 2.16

I think I remember another user having difficulty in updating to 2.1b for some reason

It also might be tha 2.1b springs into my mind for some other reason as well.

The changed region setting solved my initial burn verbatim dvd-r problem, so I am happy right now!

I can not download from that page since the files are not shown. It probably has to do with that I have to use win 2000 prof without servicepacks.

However, does firmware update give better burns, or is there another reason to why I should pursue with updates?

Mate, get the service packs. I use w2k on a few machines here myself and you really do need them.

Firmware is a fancy name for the drives' internal software. As you'd be aware with many other programs (including this one :) ) bugs can creep in or updates for the way the software functions become available. A firmware update can fix many problems and include support for other functions your drive may need.
